Ill try and mention a few that havent already been stated, although i WILL shout dragon age origins. i fing love the games

siege of Avalon medieval/low fantasy based isometric rpg. in the vein of spiderweb games and infinity engine types

any of the konung games, although they arent "amazing" again, low fantasy based on norse mythology. infinity engine, apart from 3 which is more of a 3d engine like NWN

Darklands on GOG

Drakensang, river of time is probably best to go for, although the trilogy is cheap on amazon. low fantasy, similar to the bioware games, but more 3d like dragon age/mass effect rather than infinity

recently i got hold of the fall last days of giai and marauder man of prey. i like them both. both sort of post apocalyptic, 3d engine

prince of qin and seal of evil, both a little more ARPG, but decent all the same. infinty engine type. chinese mythology

titan quest, very good ARPG. very good greek/ roman mythology, 3d engine.

Wizadry 8 i like, also D.W Bradleys wizards and warriors. on GOG (not wizards and warriors)

dungeon siege games are great ARPG's apart from 3, fantasy, 3d engine.

i like some of the spiderweb games too, nethergate being my favourite

Age of decadence is a good one, but still alpha

fairly decent spread across the board there. not all high fantasy based, but still a decent collection to perhaps critique......

I'll second the suggestion of Drakensang - the mechanics take a little while to digest, but once you've got a grip on them the game is a lot of fun. River of Time is slightly more restricted, certainly in terms of party composition, but still an excellent game.

Also, if you haven't played it, Dragon Age: Origins offers spectacular value for money if you grab the Ultimate edition with well over 100 hours of gameplay in a solid fantasy setting. Several people have suggested this one and we can't ALL be wrong! :P

Finally, if you want to step out of the medival/fantasy genre a little, Persona 3 FES (and Persona 4/P4 Golden if you have a way to play it) are excellent and distinctly different JRPGs. P3FES recently became available on the UK PSN for about £8 - bargain!
Give Arcanum here on GOG a chance. Just don't play a gunslinger your first time. Go with Melee or Magic, or a mix of the two.
Shadowrun Returns!
The SNES had a lot of great RPGs. But of course it isn't easy to get the system and games anymore (although some are re-published for newer Nintendo systems). Another thing where it sucks that they don't publish their games on PC. They could just do it per emulator like SEGA did with the Genesis Classics.

Some games in no specific order that you might or might not like:
ARPG:*
Torchlight
Torchlight 2
Diablo 2
Sacred

3D-RPG:
Gothic*
Gothic 2*
Risen
Risen 2
Two Worlds

FPRPG:
Realms of Arkania (aka Das Schwarze Auge) 1-3
Ishar
Might & Magic series

FP Dungeon Crawler:
Legend of Grimrock

Roguelike:
Dungeons of Dredmor
Nethack

Flash games (free):
Mardek RPG*
Sonny series
Epic Battle Fantasy series
Hands of War

Games marked with asterisk are those that according to your preferences are worth a look.

Or one of them mixed with diplomacy: you need to raise Charisma if you want to get a decent-sized party to fight with you, and once you do that there's lots you can accomplish through sheer Persuasion if you want to put points into it.

Thanks! I'll try some of those

Got more replies than I even hoped thanks guys! I think I have enough suggestions now to keep me going for months. Much appreciated :)
