Indeed, personally I'm more affraid the people behind bitcoin are/become corrupted and take away all your nuts.

From what I understand, they wouldn't be able to do much damage. Bitcoin is open source, so everyone with the know-how can check it, and if they released a corrupted client, they would need for the client to be adopted by a significant portion of the miners before anyone get wise on the con, which would be hard to achieve since miners can take their sweet time to update, as last year blockchain fork showed.
