Possible, but incredible hard to do. It's unlikely that - with current hardware - anyone will have the resources [even, say, google] to break them. That they are hard to crack is pretty much crucial with cryptocurrencies. Here's an overview of how bitcoin does it:
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/How_bitcoin_works - i.e. it is built on different cryptology tools [which are, by the way, open source and well known; how it functions doesn't mean - unless you have a key - that you can 'break it']. I.e. it's not really worth it, financially, to attempt to do this.
The bigger (and what would be 'lucrative' for someone trying to 'cheat' the system) is to con people or to break into their 'bitcoin wallets' and get hold of the actual currency. Much as, for example, it may be possible to forge and replicate money, but it is exceedingly difficult to do so well. Hence - most criminals out there aren't even attempting to forge money.
