ShmenonPie: I'm sure FF7 was released on PC. I know FF8 was.
avatar
Garugo: Yep, both were ported to the PC by Eidos. 7 was/is a bit of a mess without some fixes/mods though.
Ah, I never played the PC version. The possibility of modding Final Fantasy 7... That gets me going even all these years after the game's release. :D

Ralackk: As someone who has never really enjoyed JRPGs for their story and setting I'll have to recommend Chrono Trigger as well. Its one of the very few I've ever held an instrest in and completed. The fact they were all little kids didn't bother me in this game either.

Parvateshwar: Either way, if you know of a good JRPG that is FOR PC and that has been released in the past 15 years let me know.
There is a perfect entry for WRPG fans into the JRPG genre, or at least, closer to it - Vagrant Story. It's a PS1 game, but can be easily compressed to about 70MB and played on an emulator, be it on PC or PSP.

Think Diablo (dungeon crawl with lots of stuff) meets Metal Gear Solid (presentation and complex plot) meets VATS from Fallout 3 (unique targeting system) meets Shakespeare (YE OLDE ENGLISH, Romeo and Guildenstern, and so forth).

Actually, any Matsuno game (director of said games) is a good crossover point for WRPG fans - Final Fantasy Tactics, Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle, Final Fantasy XII. He likes to blend Western ideas into a Japanese shell, and does it very well.

Parvateshwar: I love RPGs. I have played just about every Western RPG that has been released in the past 15 years, however I have never been able to get into Japanese RPGs. I have tried playing a few but they have never really struck me like WRPGs and I usually get bored with them. And by a few, I mean the FF series, Zelda, and about 2 other games. Maybe its because most JRPGs are for consoles and I am an old-school-PC-kind-of-guy. Either way, if you know of a good JRPG that is for PC and that has been released in the past 15 years let me know, I would love to broaden my base and get some new experiences with new games.
Tell me you have access to a PS2 because it's full of awesome JRPGs (in addition you can play PS games on it).

The DS has some pretty good ones as well if you don't mind handheld gaming with limited graphics.
If you want the best JRPG of all time, buy a PS2 and get Persona 4 and 3. As for PC JRPGs? Nonexistent almost. You have the crap FF ports, and Reccetear, which is an amazingly cool game. Get that.
You could try the Ys series, which is a really nice jrpg game series. This series is one of my favorites since the music, gameplay, and story are extremely well done. Especially the music.

Somebody has obviously never heard of Indie games. There are tons of AWESOME freeware indie JRPGs. Just look at the list I posted above... & if that is not enough for you then let me introduce you to...

I play plenty of indie games, but indie JRPGs are weak IMO. None I have seen are worth mentioning.

And if you want JRPG's you get a PS2. It's an endless flow of top quality JRPG's, and japanese import games for that matter. Currently the PSP is doing pretty good as well.

Yeah, the DS has a ton of good JRPGs.

So does the PSP. Not quite as many as the DS, but the ones that are there are good.
Grandia 2 was released for PC, with little fanfare and with a game-critical bug... but once you solve that matter, you still have a very nice JRPG by GameArts. Granted, it's easy, but it's truly awesome and it still feels really epic.
