Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines and Ultima 7: The Black Gate.

the_bard: I appreciate the input so far. However, I was hoping you all would share some of the games you've found yourself completely immersed in. That's really what I'm looking for in this thread. This is the first time a game has affected me like this in awhile. Maybe it's timing. Or the fact that I have had few distractions today. I noticed that I had been playing it for awhile and realized I had been lost in the game.
Sacrifice, Diablo 2, Fallout 1, Soul Reaver 1&2, Dune 1, AvP 2, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Zeus, Majesty,Monkey Island 2,Commander Keen(all of them),Hitman 2, Civ 1,Black Thorne... These are the ones that come to mind:)
I just started playing Ultima Underworld 1. I can feel it grabbing ahold of me. Ultima VII is definitely on the list. As well as a few others mentioned here.

Ultima Underworld 1 was "bad" in that way, it could suck away a few more hours than planned.
UItima Underworld 2 was "horrible", as somehow it resulted in days without the sun ever being up (in my perception, that is)
I say Ultima 7: Serpent Isle is more your better bet than Ultima 7: the black gate.

Ultima VII: the black gate is ok, its got a big word and lots to do, but Serpent Isle has got a more vibrant world and compelling plot.

just a word of advice though: stay in character.

the ultima games give you lots of room to "jump the rails" and start mucking about, but doing so tends to break the game's flow and before you know it you will have stolen / killed something / someone important and broken a half dozen quests.

(kinda like how plugging in the cheat codes in GTA totally derails the game, and while it's fun for a little while, it kills the compulsion to follow the story missions and complete the game.)

TL:DR = stay in character as "the avatar" and as much fun as it is to go exploring, doing so tends to muck up the game progression.
