You know what should be public domain because it's no longer pressed? These following games.

Metal Gear Solid 1 PC, used copies 25.00 and up, eBay seldom has a decent copy
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty PC, you might get lucky and find a used copy for 30.00
Silent Hill 2 PC, have you seen how much a USED copy goes for??? Doesn't even come with a case or the manual when available
Silent Hill 4: the Room, used copies only, average is 40.00 for the UK version, US version...AWOL
Resident Evil 1 PC, you have cheap PS1 emulation copies being sold from South Korean by eBay sellers
Resident Evil 2 PC, average for a used copy is 25.00 and up, many do not have the jewelcase or insert/manual
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis PC, only the XPlosion edition (from Europe) is available

I've been lucky in the last month or so at finding copies of MGS 1, MGS 2 and RE 2 Platinum. MGS 1 is Near Mint in the jewelcase. MGS 2 is brand new, unopened in a slightly crumpled retail box. RE 2 is Near Mint in the jewelcase.

Bidding starts at... just kidding. I plan to play them.

The PC port of MGS2 was a disaster, it's just it wasn't even play-tested on pc graphics cards at all.

Glad I kept mine then, but I still prefer the PS1 version.

Or for €0.01 plus shipping from Amazon.de. The German version is identical to the UK one with English voicing and subtitles.

Around €25 plus shipping.

Again, Amazon.de is your friend. €2.49 plus shipping. German version is identical to the UK version with English VA and EFIGS subtitles.

Those are a bit of a problem in Germany admittedly, as they were only released in censored form here.

What's wrong with the Xplosiv version?

I'm lucky in that I kept all these games. I still have my Silent Hill 2, 3 and 4 in pretty good condition. In fact, I believe I have two copies of Metal Gear Solid 2 for the PC here somewhere. I need to dig my extra one out methinks.

It was indeed, but there's a patch floating around that fixes many of the problems. Personally, I stick to playing it on the PS3 now (MGS HD Collection).

awalterj: Your logic is sound but I didn't want to make it seem like one has zero chance, it's just a huge hassle to defend yourself as an individual.
Oh I never said you have zero chance - problems is that as an individual, you can't just hire a bunch of lawyers and let them do the work for you. And trials about copyright tend to be lengthy - which is, obviously, time you can't afford to lose.

avatar
awalterj: The biggest problem isn't a lack of laws but a lack of basic respect.
Hear, hear
The PC version of MGS1 is actually the best version jamyskis. The PS1 version is locked at 640x480 resolution, while the PC version can go up to 1024x768 (and of course I'm sure no one has bothered poking around in the executable to see if it can be increased further, which could be possible). Also the PC version can be hardware acceleration, so it looks way more smooth than PS1 version - which looks like a crude software mode.

I own all of those, MGS2, RE2 and the Silent Hill games are boxed, the others all have at least the jewel case, inserts and manual. All were bought from stores pretty cheap, except for RE: Nemesis which I got off GameTZ. I miss walking into stores and finding cool games stacked on shelves or in discount bins.

LOL, I've still got it in perfect condition (manual+case). Maybe I'll wait a few more years so I can sell it to some idiot on ebay for 100€ :o)

I also have Grandia 2 on PC in good condition, I know the price for J-RPG's on the secondhand market are just crazy ^o^

Go look up the price of Earthbound for the SNES, then we'll talk about the price of used copies.

These days, you'll be lucky to get just the cartridge for less that $100, and getting the manual and box will easily double or triple that.

This subject is very touchy. I believe it can't be resolved in choosing black or white side but there's a great need for an ultimate grey solution where both the authors (creators->idea) and the audience (consumers->love) are done right. In current system the only part that is done right is the sellers (publishers->money) and they don't have ideas nor love so that makes the current system wrong. We're constantly allowing money to be more important than love&ideas, that's why we live in a shitty world at present.

LMAO, he owned you. I can't believe your weak whiny reply to that. You are not my lover anymore.

Crosmando: I don't think in 5 years time that PST should become public domain and I should have the right to make Crosmando's Planescape Torment 2: The Blood War Continues, and for it to be an official and canon product, and be able to actual sell and profit from it.
I think that would be awesome. I would like to have many more games in that vein, some could be really good. Why wouldn't you like that? Maybe 20 years?

Phew, 300$ is nothing for these buyers, dude ;)

Last December, there was a real auction in Paris where some unopen games sold much higher than real arcade stations (with wheel, seat, pedals, etc.)

You're both idiots, and below my fists.

Anyone who thinks pirating a game because of it's full of CEG/Securom/Starforce malware, is the same as someone being able to plagiarize another's work... well they obviously live in a different world than the rest of us. If you can't tell the difference between DRM and intellectual property, I suggest reading a book.

Bringing up random unrelated posts I made months ago about a completely different topic, to try and hijack this thread and distract from your obviously wrong views - is extreme cowardice.

You have the brain of a child. In fact scrub that even a child understands the concept that different people own different possessions. I can tell you this, but I can't understand it for you.

Either way, It's quite obviously I am right, because well pretty much every government on the planet, the UN included, disagrees with your views on copyright/IP, and your views with never influence anything - because most people who have ever produced a piece of intellectual work don't want to have it stolen by "the public" and vandalized by fan-fic hacks, especially when it's their life's work.

Screw you people who ~need~ public domain because you have the imagination of a rat with downs syndrome. If you had any real talents you wouldn't need to make derivative works, you'd make original works. Copyright/IP/public domain laws aren't going to change in the foreseeable future, so discussing it is pointless.

I think their point is more that someone who thinks that an author should be able to protect and be paid for their intellectual work, unless said author do not agree with that person on fundamental issues. Then it is OK to steal their intellectual work :)

Three words: Interplay.
Interplay doesn't exist it's dead, it's Herve Caen and a couple of staffers and just the company name.

And I don't mind as at least they are bros with GOG.
