Please for the love of all spam-hating people out there, don't put online a 12 year old operating system, which hasn't been patched for the last almost 4 years.

Do you really have to use Win 2000?

Time travelers who think we lived in the dark ages with his do I have to use dial-up question.

What do you mean do I need a phone jack? You need a phone jack in order to use your dsl modem. Are you coming to us from 56K land which you wouild need a phone jack anyway?

Provided you have an ethernet card with this PC and broadband service:

Phone Jack -> Phone jack filter -> short telphone cable from phone jack filter to dsl modem -> ethernet cord from dsl modem to ethernet jack on back of PC.

I think he does mean DSL, and I think his broadband modem/router came in through the post today.

And while I don't really appreciate all the snide comments from those people who insist on using the most recent technology and look down on anyone who is using anything that is older than 6 months, irrespective of how useful or practical it is, one does have to wonder why he's using Windows 2000.

XP would be a much better choice for a low-powered PC or if you need that kind of backwards compatibility. 2000 doesn't offer anything that XP can't do better.

You need to connect your computer to the modem, and the modem to the phone jack. You may also need a splitter between the modem and the phone jack if you want to connect a telephone to the same jack, but that depends on actual setup and hardware.

For better advice, we would need to know which hardware you actually have (modem/router) and which kind of phone jack you want to connect it to.

Whether or not you're using Windows 2000 is irrelevant for that question, but as others have said, there really is no good reason to keep using it over Windows XP, especially if you're connecting the machine to the internet. Windows 2000 computers in the internet are a security hazard. Windows 2000 will not receive any security updates (and hasn't received any for a long time). Security holes affecting many versions of Windows keep being published, but they won't be fixed for Windows 2000 anymore, making the system an open door for malware.

Did you also order DSL service? Or do you have only POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service)?

If you ordered DSL service , it should have come with detailed instructions and an offer to install it for you.

If you have DSL, the telco gave you detailed instructions for self-installing, and you should follow those.

If you do not have DSL, you cannot plug a DSL modem into POTS service.

well what do you think most games use here . DOSbox.
if he/she still wants to use windows 2000, let it

with the tablet crap windows 8 is going i might gonna use windows 7 in 2030 still too.
It actually depends on the modem you use.

Older modems connected to the PC using the serial port.

Newer modems may connect to the PC via the usb cable or via an ethernet port.

The cord from the modem to the phone plug looks a bit like an ethernet cable but is actually a phone cable (RJ11, while the ethernet cable is a RJ45 )

So you need the right cable to connect your ¨PC to your modem (serial, usb, RJ45, depending on the modem) . And a phone cable (RJ11) from the modem to the phone wall socket. Depending on your installation you might be able to plug the RJ11 directly in the wall socket opr may have to use an adapater or a filter.

Don't waste your time gaming on that GPU. The limitations will be frustrating.

It's called extreme graphics because it is a good reminder that any linear scale has to extreme positions. And in an ever advancing technology, the lower end is the safe bet ...
