grape1829: Warlock: Master of the Arcane is out in a few days. It's supposedly a mix of Civ and Master of Magic. I haven't played the latter, but after playing the demo of this game, I can say it is definitely worth a look if you liked the Civ series at least.

overread: errr Warlock isn't sci-fi and isn't RTS -- other than those two minor problems with the OP's request its a great suggestion (demo on Steam at present and its loads of fun for any turnbased fantasy RTS fans)

As for suggestions on a good RTS I'd say:
Dark Reign 2 - great little gem here; good visuals, base building, one of the best unit AI control setups ever. Story is decent as well and is told from two different viewpoints for the two different factions.

Supreme commander 2 - slightly different gameplay style to the first game in this series, but I personally like many of the changes (esp making the tech tree contain less redundant unit types). Not quite the same scale feeling as the first, but still good solid fun with large bases.

Rise of Legends - great fantasy/scifi mix RTS game with a very well written story. Game has a steam punk; mystical arabic and techo aztec armies and is a lot of fun. Base building is a little more basic and you won't be building walls or fortifications but the gameplay is very solid.

PS if you like building bases I strongly suggest looking at Stronghold and Stronghold Crusaders - they are the first games in the series but the best (the 2nd kind of ties but fails and the 3rd outright fails). It is more historical based castle building - but you'll never get more fun in a game for building up castles and attacking opponent fortifications. Crusaders has a skirmish mode - the first game lacks this (though does have a free build mode and hitting F1 in that lets you summon invading armies.
Not really a big fantasy fan grape1829 but ill definitely have a wee look at those titles you mentioned.

SupCom 2 does rock my socks :D

I have Dark Reign 1 and really liked that but never heard anything good about the 2nd until now. I think after that recommendation ill give it a wee shot.

I only got to play a wee bit of Rise of Legends! It was a great game, wish I could find it again, any online stores you know sell it?
On GOG:
Dark Reign 1
Empire Earth 1
Populous (all 3)
Perimeter
Warlords Battlecry 3

Not on GOG:
Majesty Gold
Age of Empires I & II
Age of Mythology
Starcraft 1
Warcraft 3
Command & Conquer (everything till Tiberium Sun)
Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds
Dawn of War 1

This includes all expansions also. Until you've really played these there's no point going on a decline by playing some rotten new RTS (they're all crap).

Dark Reign 2 when it came out got front cover on many of the PC mags of the time - it was a pretty big release and had some of the best graphics of its time (Esp in an RTS game). I've honestly never been sure why it seemed to never get of the ground in a big way however.

As for Rise I don't know of any online shops selling it - however Amazon (UK) has retail copies for sale for a good price. So you can probably get hold of a hard copy if you can wait a few days for postage :)
Here is an underrated gem of a strategy game that should be here on gog, sadly I think the only way to get it is to pirate it. I am talking about Rise of Nations Gold

New £5.45 from Amazon :)
Granted stocks in different counties will vary, but people should never forget to check for hard copies of games. Remember even in this day and age of digital releases many game still get a hard copy with CD

but those hard copies of rise of nations were released before Windows 7 released I do not know if it is compatible and/or if the OP is using Windows 7

True its always a risk with buying any software that isn't brand new - though in general I find most older games have more problems with audio and video than with the OS system (normally things like screen flickering).

Still there won't be any newer releases of Rise of Nations so the CD hard copy + patches will be about all that is out there to get
The internet always has a solution to any problem.... Unless its MDK, still cant get that to work :/

Try to run it in software mode. The shortcut for the GOG version defaults to hardware mode, which a lot of people have problems with (you need to specify that you want the option to run the game in software mode during the games installation).
