Today we’re releasing the last installment of the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue#all_genres/search/zork]Zork series. As they say, third time’s a charm, The Grand Inquisitor is the third part of the graphical Zork games and surely the best. By far the best one in terms of being accurate to the original Zork adventures with its surreal, silly humor and the pop culture references that leave you smiling when you encounter them ;)

Zork: Grand Inquisitor is set in the Great Underground Empire where an ex-student of the Magic University takes over the whole country and implements a totalitarian regime banning magic as a whole. The dictator is the titular Grand Inquisitor who seeks to shun magic, shun the appearance of magic, shun everything, and then shun shunning. The Grand Inquisitor takes a unique view of how to shun someone with the aid of “swift totemization” by courtesy of Frobozz Electric, a process that, trust us, you don't want to go through. The people of Quendor need a hero to relieve them from the dictatorial regime! You are AFGNCAAP. "Ageless, Faceless, Gender-Neutral, Culturally-Ambiguous Adventure Person" which happens to be the hero in most of adventure puzzle games, as well as in Infocoms original Zork games. You meet Dungeon Master Dalboz who gives you the quest to find the three legendary artifacts (one of the Cubes of Foundation, the Coconut of Quendor, and the Skull of Yoruk) required to bring back magic and put an end to the Grand Inquisitor's regime.

The graphic side of Zork aged very well and with the use of real actors for its cut-scenes, Z:GI has nothing to be ashamed of. Superb music and ambient sounds would be enough for many games, but Zork: Grand Inquisitor takes things a step further be being one of the first games to offer full closed captioning so the hearing impaired can enjoy the game to the fullest. Don’t wait and grab the last installment of the Zork series for $5.99 DRM-free only on GOG.com.
Wishlisted for now.

Taleroth: I love adventure games. But the only Zork I've played is the first!

I presume they, especially this one, work out well as standalone titles?

lugum: they work as standalone titles
:o good to know, since this seems to be the best of the lot.

trebor8273: is that dirk bendicT(face and starbuck) in the picture?
yes from the a-team and battlestar galactica

gosh he looks so old now.
just read on wiki he had cancer but refused medical treatment and got cured by a strict diet.
he didnt get much fame anymore after those series.
he is gonna do a tour now in the uk as columbo.

I remember this, will wait for a Zork promo though. Bring on more EA games!
I've only played Nemesis, and didn't like it so much due to the vastness of the world accessible to you from the very beginning - I prefer a more linear approach through which you can work systematically room by room. How does this one compare?

Definitely wishlisted. This is my favorite Zork game. Anyone know if this is based on the DVD version (it had higher quality video) and if the issues with Windows XP and newer are fixed?

Constantly amazed by GOG community's generosity. Good on you.
I'm not familiar with the series at all, but I'm glad to see at least another OLD game was released, esp. one that many people love. :) To be honest, I get kinda cynical whenever any game after 2003 is released on here. Sometimes when this happens it can feel like the site is trying to push games that didn't sell to well the first time around, sometimes for good reasons (crappy gameplay, buggy issues, etc.) But, again, sticking to bringing back '80s and '90s games, even crappy ones, that don't work on modern machines makes me happy. :)

There's plenty of "shitty" pre-2003 games here as well, but whatever floats your boat.

I agree. As long as the game is good I'm not too worried about how old it is. To the publishers anything past a few years old that isn't raking in full price is probably old.

Hey, there's some seriously great 2003 and later stuff here. Painkiller Black, IL-2 Sturmovik, Guilty Gear X2, Stranger's Wrath, Another World 15th Anniversary, The Witcher series, King's Bounty, Far Cry, HoMM IV, Psychonauts, Unreal Tournament 2004, Evil Genius, Freedom Force vs the 3rd Reich, Space Rangers 2, and so on. I'd be sad if any one of those weren't here, I think it's worth having newer games available too. I think the level of quality of games from this millennium here on GOG has been pretty good.

In fact, since there are a lot more games here from before 2004, for obvious reasons, there are a lot more bad games from before 2004 as well. Personal Nightmare is part of the pre-1995 set, and it's not exactly a best seller. There are plenty of awful games from before 1995, but there are only 37 games here from before 1995, so we simply don't have a lot of them here. Most of the bad games here on GOG fit squarely into the 1995-2005 era, as that's what makes up the majority of the catalog. Being recent has little to do with a game here being good or not.

I'd start worrying when we see horse training kiddie game shovelware and broken indie games from a place in Russia nobody's ever heard of that might not even exist anymore. I know we have Master of Orion 3 and Sensible Soccer 2006, but overall the quality control here could be much, much worse.

Also, what the fuck is wrong with you? Drop everything you're doing, pull out your credit card, and buy the Zork Anthology. Never speak to me again until you can tell me what's likely to happen to you in a pitch black room. :D

......I'm serious. ¬_¬

(Oh, and Zork is a hidden Easter Egg in Black Ops. If you happen to be into that sort of thing, well... congratulations, you already have it, go find it and play it!)
