hedwards: Buy a Timex, those things will outlast you pretty much every time. I've lost a few of them, but never had to give one up because it stopped working.

Hell, my first Timex literally broke my arm without becoming damaged.

Gowor: I currently have a Timex which survived getting partially pulled into a 3T MRI scanner, which is a pretty hard experience for a watch. I had to reset the indicators (they were all pointing towards the magnet), but other than that - no problems.

I was lucky I pulled it out before it went too far into the magnetic field - I'm not sure if the bracelet would break before my hand would :-)
Kind of reminds me of college. I forget what piece of equipment it was where you'd have to remove all your metallic objects before entering the room. That thing was a monster though. Also had an electron microscope. Good times.
