Pfft. Have you looked at iD's own webstore's prices? Yikes! $15-20 for pretty much every single game. They might as well not have their own webstore.

I'm sure they've tricked a few into buying though.

It's rather pointless though, a good amount of those games are DOS, and everyone plays Doom etc in those source ports like GZdoom.

1. id Software (who made Quake) got bought by Bethesda, so GOG needs a license from Bethesda if they want to sell Quake.

2. Bethesda has adopted a policy to release their games exclusively on Steam (Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim). Even 3rd party vendors who sell these products are only selling STeam keys.

I am pretty sure that GOG has tried to get a license for selling Quake long ago, but due to the reasons listed above, this is probably difficult. I wouldn't expect Quake to be released on GOG anytime soon. If you want to change that, I suggest writing a mail to id and Bethesda and asking them to sell their games via GOG. If enough people do this, then Bethesda may realize that there is a large market outside of Steam that they are currently ignoring.

Bethesda don't sell exclusively on Steam, they just use Steam for DRM and content delivery like almost every other mainstream PC game publisher does.

So there aren't enough GOGs to account for every time someone has come up with that statement ;-p

In related news, didn't someone even once claim that GOG was breaking the law by selling abandonware?

Actually, id was bought by ZeniMax who also own Bethesda. Not by Bethesda itself. And ZeniMax also owns Arkane Studios, who is on GOG.

Thanks, I didn't know about Arkane. I wouldn't read too much into the difference between Zenimax and Bethesda since I have never seen them at odds for anything (this is probably why I keep using the two interchangeably, thanks for putting that right). Of course, it may just be that they are really god at keeping their disagreements internal ... :)

GOG has a relatively tiny range of games on offer. 380. now look at Steam: just under 1800 last time i checked. and that's nothing. now look at GamersGate: some 3000 games. and still you won't find hundreds of must-have classics there.

there are dozens of all-time classic series that should be on GOG but aren't: Civilization, Doom, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer, WarCraft, Need for Speed, Comanche, etc. etc. the list is endless and chances are most of them will never show up.

Oh, Quake 3 is my all time favorite FPS. Reading this topic kind of broke my hopes to see it on GOG. Unfortunately I don't use Steam and probably never will.

I did some checking up, ZeniMax aquired Arkane Studios in 2010 but Arx Fatalis was released here in 2009. That means GOG made the deal with Arkane Studios, not ZeniMax.

Btw, does anybody know then Arx Fatalis dropped in price?

License issues aside, as things stand GOG has no way to compete with the pricing of the Quake Collection.

So, even if GOG did get the licenses for various Quakes, there'd be people bitching long and loud that' it's 'Cheeper on Steem !!!'

You can still buy the games from 3D Realms, pretty much the only downside to buying it there than here is that you don't get goodies or downloads for life. But they're DRM free and work well.

Unless you are sitting in Germany, which will never see the collection due to Wolfenstein and Doom 2.
