Being better than RotR isn't a big accomplsihment though.

I remember this game being popular back before I was a PC gamer. Back when I still stuck to the Amiga. Never got to try it though.
I've never played Rise of the Robots, but remember when that game came out and read quite a bit about it back then as well as over the years, and I'm willing to make an educated guess that OMF2097 is a MUCH better game then RotR was.

As domgrief said -- it deserves to be right up there with some of the most ground-breaking PC releases off all time (and it's without a doubt one of the best fighting games on PC, ever) but it somehow slipped under the radar and into obscurity. But maybe that just adds on to its charm ;)

Lorfean: Oh wow, yes!! I love One Must Fall 2097 and used to pilot the Jaguar and Flail bots. And of course Nova, after unlocking him (I mostly played Tournament Mode, as I loved the progression and upgrades system).

The sequel was a letdown, sadly, and I haven't heard anything new about the series since. Didn't know it was freeware either :) any chance of seeing it on the site, GOG.com Team? Maybe as a free title, like Dragonsphere and Tyrian 2000 (which are also freeware IIRC)? I for one would love to have it on my shelf!
Yeah, seeing it on GOG with some freebies would be cool!
Me an my friends used to play this like crazy. I think it was just second to Mortal Kombat on the play list, though I always liked OMF better.
Definetly remember One Must Fall. One of my favourite games from 90's
Great music, "easy to learn hard to master" gameplay, unique robots to choose and lots of memorable opponents to fight. I still hate you and your jumpy gargoyle, Ariel! Jazzy in his Jaguar or Shredder was quite nasty opponent too if you aren't careful.

Been playing it recently with DosBox and it's still excellent fighting game. Flail has always been my bot of choice. Such a fun robot to use. Electra and Shredder were absolutely devastating in capable hands too.
Also, spamming earthquake with Nova, headstomp with Katana or spike charge with Thorn is always absolutely hilarious. Maybe not always effective, but damn fun.
Are there any plans for this to be released on GOG??? It is an old favorite of mine.

I've raised the point more times than I think was reasonable. The game has been released for free by the developers, so you can just 'have' it. The only problem is that you'll need to do the dosbox config yourself. I found the only thing I needed to do was set the cycles setting to be about 20K and then it all worked nicely.

Why they won't release it? They won't even say. I assume because it would have to be free, and therefore would be additional support and dev work, which would get them nothing back. However I like to think GOG has an eye on just bringing back great games, even if it's not profitable.
