Are you ready to clash with the devil's army? Show us how fast you can pull the trigger. Start a new game in Painkiller and play the first level in the first chapter on Nightmare difficulty (or above). After you complete it, go into the level selection screen and take a screenshot that sums up your game (like the one attached to this post) and send it to users@gog.com. The idea is to complete the level without using Black Tarot cards. We have a free game each for the two fastest GOG.com users. The contest ends on Thursday, April 16 at 11:59 p.m. EDT and the winners will be announced in this thread on Saturday, April 18, with the community update news.
You have to own the game on GOG.com to enter the contest.
Update: Congratulations, Kyorisu and Jager, for winning the contest! :)

baldurk: OK, I want to clarify to be absolutely sure here, that I'm NOT flinging accusations around. I'm not accusing anyone of cheating, and I'm not saying that whoever wins this cheated.
However, that screenshot is not proof of performance at all.
Even assuming that people don't photoshop the numbers, which is quite possible, there are other ways you could easily get a very low time.
For example, I loaded up painkiller with powermad (a set of utilities to let you do all sorts of neat things). I could have toggled god mode, but it was even easier just to simply explode all enemies currently spawned at the press of the key. Running through the level like that got me an impressive time: http://baldurk.org/speedrunnin.png (also attached).
So I got a 3:00 time, and really I don't think there's anything in that screenshot that incriminates me. I could easily go back and do the same thing faster, and pick up more souls, ammo and gold. Most of the time I was just standing around waiting for the enemies to spawn. I could also get rid of the FRAPS fps counter, that was a stupid mistake.
So again, I'm not accusing anyone of cheating, but I think it's quite possible that people could - and I think it's important for people to know.

But then you'd have to live with it. Besides, isn't half the fun in the competition itself?

That IS! .. when something free isn't on the line.
Often times, generally decent people will stoop to remarkable depths to get something free, if they think they can get away with it. Especially if that something free is something they want that has a monetary value (regardless of how low it may be).
I completely forgot that this was ending tonight, I wanted to at least try one more time, oh well, I've been reading all day, and it was totally worth it.
Me and my sore trigger finger would like to thank the GOG team for the award!
If anyone has any doubts about the validity of my record, I hereby solemny swear that I, Jager, am no cheat and the 4:17 time is really the fruit of my hard labour.
Maybe now I will give the review contest a fair go...
Yay, Thanks GOG.

Damn you beat me by 5 seconds. Nice work.

Nice job, man. Any chance you can record a video of it? I'm honestly curious how you finished it so fast; I've never broken 7 minutes personally.
In theory I could, but in practice it would require too much video editing on my end. Read on...
There are four good guidelines to reaching record times:
-kill enemies in minimal time with 1 shot kills/sweeps:
the biggest pain are the undead knights - freeze them then shoot them or cut them up with the rotating painkiller (especially when they stand close together)
-spawn camping:
memorize the locations from whence the enemy spawns and kill fast
-bunny hopping:
keep pressing the JUMP key after each jump for maximum speed
-checkpoint running :
upon reaching the next autosave checkpoint start repeating the previous one for the best time possible
So you see, checkpoint running is the main reason the speedrun video would require a lot of editing.
The most time can be gained or lost at the checkpoint before entering the church, because there is an F-ton of enemies to slay there.
If you follow this guidelines, reaching a time of 4:30 is a cakewalk. But it gets a bit harder after that...

Freeze? There's secondary shotgun ammo in the first level?
Indeed there is.
I just did that for fun (I have the disc copy of the Gold version, found under my mattress... wtf?) and I did it in 5:42. Pathetic. That was on the easiest difficulty level.
Well, it was a necessary thing to bump this thread, because for the first time Painkiller speedrun was confirmed by speed demos archive on the 27 March, 2011, done by me.

and to think I was actually getting ready to open the game and fire up the first level

sigh...
That does not mean you can not compete.

The current world records are linked here:

http://www.dreamcatchergames.com/forums/showthread.php?357601-Speedrun-Hall-of-Fame/page4

As you see, many of the level records have been already improved short after i presented my speedrun.

There are some rules by witch a speedrun must be done: trauma difficulty, no tarot cards, record in resolution not lower than 640X480, demos not accepted.
