DreadMoth: Stuff that would be worthwhile in a re-release:

• Updated textures
• Updated models
• Updated background images (even if they just add some dithering to reduce banding)
• Increased "tick rate" / precision for unit movement
• Increased draw distance

The game already supports high resolutions pretty well :P
(see here for instructions for running the game at high/wide resolutions. If only the UI could be scaled up...)

OldFatGuy: I heard this title the other day in relation to another, can someone just say briefly what kind of game this is or what other games it's comparable to??? (that's what I'm trying to remember, what the other game was where several reviewers said it was homeworld clone.
avatar
DreadMoth: It's a 3D space RTS.

You might be thinking of O.R.B. Off-World Resource Base? (looking at the "Most helpful review")

Some other games with some similarities to Homeworld:

Far Gate
Star Wolves
Starmageddon
Sounds like basically its a reskin job

Cormoran: Ahh, so they overspent on bullshit.
They spent on what was most useful.
avatar
ET3D: None. No one said they overspent. They just "overspent" in terms of trying to provide the best possible image quality.

I'll wait to see the result, but I'm happy that they've touched up the graphics.

Well, Pitchford has plenty of that to spare.
Is he paid per hour or per line of bullshit? :D
After the Aliens fiasco I would never buy anything off them again, I love Borderlands, but I wont buy future releases of that either.
I still have the original homeworld games and they actually still look good.

P1na: Kinda pointless, if you ask me. Just bring it to GOG ported to work, and everybody will be happy. Geting HD is nice, but I see no point in going overboard (and cause delays) for such a thing.
Plus, the original can be played in your native (most likely widescreen) resolution, which is always nice :)

Yes, thank you, that is the one I was reading about. Man I hates my memory. It was just a few days ago I read that, but I couldn't remember which game it was and then saw homeworld mentioned here and my brain goes "Homeworld, oh yeah that's the one that I read @#$%^& is a clone of." (where @#$%^ is my brain doing big farts)

Thank you.

EDIT: Ah yes, and now I remember why I was reading it. It's part of the weekend deal, and was one of the games I was going to pick up until I read the big news this weekend.

No, I'm not saying I'm boycotting gog. But I am reserving my right to. If many of my fellow gamers think that's the right thing to do, then I will support them by doing it as well. Until I've figured out to the best of my ability one way or another how most folks are reacting, I'll just take a holiday from buying for awhile.

I just hope it ends up decent.
Err, how many gamers there are out there that have 4K monitors to begin with? 1? 2? Sounds huge waste of funds to spend money something that benefits only a few.

Bad PR wording

Having high-quality assets will make it look better regardless of resolution (and help to "future-proof" it for people replaying it in the future when 4k+ screens are more common/affordable).

I really agree with that stance. I really have a great respect for the developers at gearbox, but their marketing, financial, and PR really screwed royally again and again in my opinion.
This is going to be Steam exclusive, I can feel it, the "excuse" will be using Steam for multiplayer matchmaking.

4K on 24" makes everything tiny and I can't fit anything bigger in my room so... also considering games run better on smaller resolution, I don't see any reason to upgrade anyway. Also future operating systems and hardware compatibility are far greater problems for future compatibility than resolution is.

Here are some questions that should have been asked If this wasn't just a press release pretending to be an interview:

- I like that you are future-proofing the game. What about normal people right now, who would like to enjoy the game they played a long time ago? How high are the new system requirements going to be? What about the new pricepoint?

- HD remakes are known to introduce new bugs and make questionable changes to the original art design. How are you actively dealing with these issues? I understand some of the team loves the original game. Love can be blinding.

- Is there going to be a simultaneous release of classic edition with the new HD version?

The answers to these question would be the same anyway. But it would be nice to see something that isn't doing the usual routine 'What about Homeworld? Oh, really? Great, thank you for that answer. It's beautiful. You are a beautiful person, Mr Pitchford. Yeah, yeah, I shouldn't ask about Homeworld, you know what you're doing! Sparing no expenses, haha.'

Comparison gif based on frames from this video. (compressed and over-exposed source makes it a bit tricky to make out some parts)

What I think I can see from that:

- model appears to be identical

- significantly increased texture resolution, some detail and style changes

- normal/bump mapping

- specular

- environment / cube mapping / reflections

- possibly lighting model update and/or ambient occlusion
