Hi, I did a little reading about the Saints Row series, and my understanding is that there's a lot of comedy thrown in. It's referred to as a GTA clone, but I've never played GTA either.

Is it immature humor? Are the games in this series considered funny primarily by teenagers, or is there more mature adult humor that middle age gamers can laugh at?

I'm sure there's some in there that everyone can laugh at, but what age group is this primarily geared towards?

Btw, my question is not meant to insult anyone. Whatever floats your boat, I don't care.

Depends on the situation, at times it's immature, at times it's just because something funny happens sometimes I made stuff funny myself.

I find it better than GTA for the most part, especially the first two saints row games.

I don't know, I just have this feeling that the GTA and Saints Row series are much more appreciated by 16 year olds. Is that feeling more or less accurate, or am I off?

SR3 and 4 went all out to parody land, but SR2 had a distinct personality, it was kind of like Sleeping Dogs in that.

I personally enjoyed the parody style of SR3. I did not enjoy Sleeping dogs as much as I thought I would've.
Yeah, weapons like "The Penetrator" probably let you know what kind of humor you're in for. It sometimes does referential humor as well, but it's all pretty dumb and immature. For a sandbox game that's all about being let off the leash and causing chaos, that can be pretty fun, but it's not going to be everyone's thing. If you're looking for a mature game, this isn't it.

I feel a lot of the fun lies in the co-op mode, things seem a lot funnier with a partner in crime for whatever reason. It is a fun series, though I've only played Saints Row 2 and 3 myself. Saints Row 2 was significantly less crude so that might be more your kind of game.

The best part of unintentional humor was on 2, I had my character as obese as possible, completely naked (Other than the blurring censor), and I liked the cut scene where it shown my character robbing a bank on tv as the censoring, etc all made it look like it was actually on tv.
Yeah, I've watched a little video of it before. It seems like the novelty would wear off for me. Kind of reminds me of the Postal series in some ways. I haven't played it either.

Edit: Thanks for the links just the same, though, cmdr_flashheart.

Thanks.

Yeah, what you said jives with what my impression of it is. The series is on sale on Steam, and 2 and 3 with all the DLC are real cheap, but I don't think they're my cup of tea.

No problem! It's like GTA series in that you can be a complete donkey about stuff if you want, since these are both sandbox games, but you don't have to do that, and can just follow the campaigns.
It can be a bit crass at times, but it mostly depends on the game in the series itself. Personally I recommend Saints Row 2 since it has a fine line between being serious and having its whacky moments. If anything a lot of the humor in 2 comes from how straight it plays when something so insane happens.
Slight warning if you are thinking of getting SR2 on steam, the port is horrible, like seriously one of the worst I've ever seen. I haven't tried it with my 360 controller yet but on keyboard it's unplayable, when driving most of your turns will be 90 degrees turns. There is a patch for that but that isn't too good either, the driving is slightly improved (still not good) and it makes all the cars handle exactly the same.
In a game where driving is one of the main mechanics it was a pretty ass move to not port it properly.

If pimpmonkey's post made you laugh, you should check out the Saint's Row games. If you find that kind of stuff too "crass" then avoid these games.
I dunno, I thought it was fun, and really enjoyed playing 3 (as opposed to Sleeping Dogs, which near the end I was struggling to stay interested in).
The zany sidemissions are a highlight..
Like being told to reduce property values of some area within the given time limit, so then you went there with a sewage truck and spewed as much crap on as many houses as possible before time ran out.
Or having to commit insurance fraud, so you had to leap in front of as many cars and stuff within the given time limit to injure yourself the required amount.

It certainly isn't serious, but it is fun. And not being serious doesn't mean it doesn't have a reasonably solid story progression (If you're interested in that, rather than just mucking about with side missions and challenges).

I agree about what was said earlier, though. While people say SR2 is the better game, the port on steam is rubbish unfortunately, and I'd go with 3 instead (I certainly couldn't go all the way through after having played 3 with the much more fluid controls).

^this, I've never played a PC port quite as horrible as saints row 2 (i've heard of several that could compete, but have understandably shied away from them). I initially played it on my last computer years after its release and I had to play the damn thing in some ludicrous resolution like 640x480 with everything turned all the way down, this was on a computer that could play GTA4 quite well on average settings at 1080p. It works a little better on my new PC which can just power through the horrible optimisation, but then you still have to deal with the horrible controls.

As a result I tend to think 3 and 4 are superior. I prefer the more out there tone they take and really hope they take it even further if they ever make a 5.

That's mostly due to the fact that the game runs on turbo speed. Someone who made the game got the bright idea to link the game's speed to your processor speed. So faster processor->faster game. There is a fix for it, but it is fiddly.
Still, I enjoyed SR 2 more than SR3, for pretty much the same reasons as SpooferJahk mentioned.
