Best. Cover. Art. Ever.

7th Legion, a futuristic real-time strategy game with a great selection of units to lead into battle over the course of 35 extensive and challenging missions, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Centuries of reckless consumption and overpopulation had brought the Earth's ecosystem to the brink of collapse. In desperation, governments of the world developed an interstellar Evacuation Program granting exit passes only to the most privileged segments of society. The poor and common were left behind to perish. Now centuries later, the "Chosen" have decided to return to Earth and assume control. But there's a catch - the 7th Legion is waiting with a powerful and fiery "welcome home" BBQ planned in their honor.

7th Legion is an excellent RTS title featuring endless strategic choices and timed sub-missions in a futuristic war-torn world. You get to play command either the 7th Legion or the Chosen in over 35 feverish finger-blistering combat missions. Over 50 Battle Cards and 20 power-ups may instantly turn the tide of battle. Progressive technology levels reveal advanced buildings, units and weapons. Ruthless mercenaries get smarter as they collect mutilated bodies for cold hard cash. The game comes with a full MP3 soundtrack!

Even though it did sport the most awesome game cover art of the 1990s, 7th Legion--released a little bit after Command and Conquer: Red Alert-- was overlooked by many strategy fans. If you had the misfortune of being one of them, or if you do remember 7th Legion fondly, get it now on GOG.com for only $5.99!

Niggles: Nice release

Note - the one review i can see for it on GOG probably isnt by someone who actually bought it here....
That was probably mine, as I was the first to post a review when the game was released. True, I might not have seen the GOG version, but I still vividly remember the gameplay. The thing with the cards is a failed experiment in RTS because of the gamechanging cards that you can play, which render all strategy meaningless. And the pathfinding, ugh. If you don't follow your units and correct their path, they'll just walk towards the far edge of the map instead of where you wanted them.
Wow, remember buying a pirated version of this from a man in a trench coat and a leather bag when I was a wee lad. Didn't know what it was at the time, but damn, did it have a cool cover.

Guess I'll find out soon if those fond memories still hold. Mechs FTW!
Remember it. I also remember how a review in one of polish video game magazines criticized the game for having soundtrack as MP3. It was very novel idea for which the writer applauded the devs but then said what can be amounted to: "The world is not ready for it"

...
i don't actually have the magazine with me so I can't check the fact but im pretty sure it was 7th legion :)

It didn't have music as mp3's, but that had started becoming established at the time, so maybe they criticised the game for not having mp3 music? 7th Legion used FastTracker II (.XM) music, similar to the Impulsetracker format used by Unreal, Unreal Tournament and Deus Ex.

Is "Z" anything like 7th Legion?

I've played neither, though I'm curious about both.

Not really, though I enjoyed Z much better. Z doesn't have any base-building, and it's all about capturing buildings (factories, mostly, that automatically churn out selected units at a predetermined rate,) map sections, and strategic points.
Another Epic Megagames title is in the catalog? Awesome to the max! Gives me hope that we'll see other titles by them soon, especially One Must Fall 2097.

OMF2097 is freeware anyway, though I guess goodies like the sound track etc bundled in one place would be nice.
