Fuck yeah! I'm actually surprised I held myself back from buying Flatout 2 from either DotEmu or Steam these past few years. Had it on Mac when I still gamed on one, and I must say it's very probably my all-time favorite racer. Playing Flatout 1 after that felt like a drastic step back even if it was enjoyable in its own right, but, yeah, it's nothing near the greatness of its sequel. That's why I'm really crossing my fingers that Next Car Game will be even better.

Consider it bought. :) Now there I thought I might be able to go through January without buying a game. Damn. ;)

Trilarion: I found Flatout 1 to be almost unsteerable and unforgiving with keyboard. Also the graphics and other effects were quite boring. So I'm not sure how good Flatout 2. I would definitely prefer NFS.
Let me just say going from Flatout 1 to 2 is going to be a night and day difference. Better effects, sound, music, tracks, campaign, cars, handling... everything! Hell, even multiplayer is a hoot in 2. Now this is how sequels should always be like. As I mentioned above, I enjoyed the first after I finally pushed myself to beat it about a month ago, but it's got nothing on part two.

Pretty sure a number of folks are happy today :-)

Ditto for DotEmu, I came THIS close to getting it there while I got the Genesis collection.

Only thing that stayed my hand was the thought that it might come out on GOG in the near future and wanting as many games as possible in one place.

Does anyone know if there is XBOX 360 controller support on this one?
... lost interest at "Papa Roach". And now I just read it features music by "Nickelback", as well.

Seriously, who compiles these soundtracks? :(

That said, the game looks pretty fun, and it's good to see some more racing games, especially some fairly "recent" ones.

I'm almost tempted to get this one, eventually... How customizable is the soundtrack? Can I just remove or mute some of the songs? Hah hah.

As lugum suggested, consider upgrading to a cheapo dedicated graphics card, if you think you'd be at all capable of installing it. You should be able to find something suitable for your needs at a very small price ( if you're lucky, maybe someone has a spare older graphics card they'd be willing to give you for free ). Just make sure it's compatible with your mainboard etc. -- ask around the forum ( here or at some computer hardware forum ) if you can't figure out what you should get. ( Old ) On-board graphic chipsets are mostly useless for advanced 3D games.

It's funny you said that. Normally, I would never ever listen to any of the music presented here, but surprisingly enough I find that it pretty much perfectly complements the gameplay. Flatout 2 just wouldn't feel the same without it to me.

I suppose you could always mute the music and play your own in the background. That said, unfortunately there are no music controls besides the volume slider. Heh.

In a previous post I may have exaggerated as calling it my 'all-time favorite', but it's definitely one of the best and more importantly most fun arcade racers of recent years - I don't care much for realism in my racing. It's always fun slamming into your opponents to knock them off the track or even guide them into a tree or rock to make the driver fly out of the car (and gain some extra nitro boost, which can also be earned via drifts, scenery destruction, or air time). Though my favorite is 'death from above' by crushing them via landing on top of them, which is considerably tougher to do though. There's also plenty of destructible scenery on every track.

So much this. I usually don't listen this type of music, but I enjoyed it while playing FlatOut 2. ;)

So you're saying, playing this game will potentially cause people to develop shitty taste in music? ;P

Nah, seriously, since it's a PC game, shouldn't it be possible to simply remove or replace some of the songs? I remember some recent racing games also give you the option to skip songs you don't like during gameplay.

Just out of curiosity, which Papa Roach and Nickelback songs did they choose for the game, specifically? There's a few which pretty much cause me to have allergic reactions, because for some reason radio stations here kept playing them for years. :(

But to get back to the game -- I have the same preferences there. Realistic racing games and simulations don't do anything for me. I prefer over the top action, explosions, crashes and crazy off-road tracks, and this game seems to deliver all of that and more. ( Which makes me wonder why they didn't go for Motörhead and Slayer as a suitable soundtrack. :D ) The first FlatOut seems to have some hilarious bonus games -- does the sequel have those as well?

Yep and they're IMHO better. ;)

Roman5: A good release but...this isn't the best version of the game available

Flatout: Ultimate Carnage is technically the same game but with improved graphics and extra content, why didn't GOG release that game here instead?
FlatOut 2 is the best version of the game for the PC. Ultimate Carnage has a tweaked driving model that's optimized for console audiences (=easier to drive), Games for Windows Live integration, no mods to speak of and no LAN multiplayer.

To clarify: two years after the original, they released the same game with added DRM and an absent LAN mode. Talk about giving PC fans their money's worth.

I think you are mistaken, young padawan. My Google-Fu is so powerful, I don't even need to search for information myself. ;P

But never mind that. "Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction" -- that just about evens out even the worst noise Nickelback & Co. could possibly contribute to the soundtrack. ( And to be fair, at least half of this playlist looks very good to me. )

All right, I'm sold. But since there's no limited discount on the game, I think I'll wait until next month before I buy it. Just one more thing, does it have decent controller support? Keyboard controls for a racing game doesn't sound so hot.

( Edit: Also, the question remains why the hell the GOG team decided to advertise on the gamecard that the game contains music by Papa Roach and Nickelback, but did not mention Megadeth, Rise Against etc. Are the majority of GOG users more likely to buy a copy because of Nickelback? I would hope not. )

( Edit 2: ... Wait, I have it figured out. I think they mentioned those bands as a warning of sorts, so people can't complain after they've bought it, in case the music causes physical or mental damage. :P )

As long your gamepad is X-input compatible you should be good. Just did a test with my Logitech F310 and it worked fine, but the game didn't recognize it when I switched to D-input mode so I guess that is not supported. I could assign any of the buttons and the analog sticks, but for some reason the game doesn't recognize the d-pad. *shrug* Ran a quick race and didn't have any issues otherwise.

Ditto. I can't think of any more boring/bland band.

That's always irritating, when the game won't fully recognize or support all of the input options of the controller. I have a few PC games where you can only use the sticks for menu navigation, instead of the d-pad, which is kind of awkward and inaccurate.

Anyhow, I have a wired Microsoft/Xbox style controller, which seems to be compatible with just about anything, so I should be good. Just wanted to be sure that it does have built-in controller support.

Kind of itching to try this now, but I was waiting for the release of the Banner Saga and/or the Shadowrun expansion, if and when those arrive here at GOG. :/

Edit: Just watched the trailer for the game. Holy crap. I think I might just break down and get this before the other games I've been waiting for.
