The anti-hero with a symbiotic blade returns with a vengeance.

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/legacy_of_kain_soul_reaver_2]Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2, fallen vampire’s personal vendetta turned into a video game, is available on GOG.com right now for $5.99.

Just two months ago GOG.com released Soul Reaver and you had a chance to meet Raziel, a vampire-turned-wraith reanimated in the Spectral Realm by The Elder God in order to kill Kain. Well, the fight is not over as Raziel needs to go back through time and continue his quest to destroy the almighty vampiric lord. Soul Reaver 2 picks up at the moment Soul Reaver left off--you’ve chased down Kain to kill him, he’s gone through some sort of time portal. And now it’s time to settle the score. However cliche the story might seem, Soul Reaver 2, even though it’s a combat-focused third-person action adventure, offers a brilliantly written and very intelligent gothic story. The characters, interactions, and tension between them are deep and provide very satisfying interludes between the bread and butter of the game, which is devouring Raziel’s enemies as he makes his way to a reckoning with his creator.

With a great story, beautiful graphics, and a lot of puzzle / platforming elements, Soul Reaver 2 is something more than your usual action-oriented romp. Drift away and kill some extra-dimensional demons in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 for just $5.99 on GOG.com.
For those who have played this game, I have a question: can one enjoy this game without playing or any familiarity whatsoever with the prequels first?
Hey GOG, BLOOD OMEN please?

It can be confusing, but you certainly CAN enjoy it - this was my first game in the series that got me hooked! You won't understand all the details after first playthrough, but what you will understand will be enjoyable for certain.
So, does this one support gamepads completely out of the box, without xpadder?

I'm quite sure that I've played it with a Rumblepad 2 ages ago. Unless there's some unexpected problems with newer operating systems it should work fine.

MichaelPalin: I'm just fearing that they may release Blood Omen 2 before Blood Omen, which would be quite annoying.
Lol, I've been fearing the same thing since GOG released Sould Reaver. Now I believe that the next game from the series is gonna be Defiance and then we'll have to wait at least for a few months before any Blood Omen is gonna be released.

Licurg: Thanks for the back up, LOL :P

lugum: okay who backs me up and says blood omen is better? :p
I will. BO1 is teh best. SR2 has (slighty) superior story, but gameplay sucks.

GOG, Blood Omen, pls. I'll buy every LOK game if you release it.
Where's Blood Omen - Legacy of Kain ?? Stop releasing inferior follow-ups and give us what we want damnit :p

If anything you should at least play the previous Soul Reaver as this one is its direct sequel (i.e. it starts are the exact moment the previous end); reading the plot of Legacy or Kain : Blood Omen on wikipedia could also help.

I will never recommend for someone to jump right into Soul Reaver 2 without playing the previous games. You could possibly enjoy it but you won't have nearly any where near the impact the story should give you as if you do play the other games. The whole storyline of Soul Reaver 2 twists and turns around the events of the original Blood Omen game. The characters you encounter and the the stuff that happens.

You AT LEAST need to play Soul Reaver in my opinion. That will set this game up for you.

If you are really intent on not playing them then get on youtube and watch a couple Let's Play of each one in full. This will give you your storyline appropriately and set you up for the game.

I can understand not being able to play Blood Omen but you can get Soul Reaver 1 off here as well so I'd grab that if I were you along with this, watch Blood Omen on youtube, then play the games.

As others have said, LoK in general (with the notable exception of Blood Omen 2) does a pretty good job bringing new players up to speed on the story through background exposition and dialogue (which is one of the primary strengths of the series--the voice-acting is simply superb)

That being said (and what follows is my purely subjective opinion), SR2 is hailed as the greatest game in the series purely because of its story. Because frankly, the gameplay's kinda crap. As such, for someone coming into the LoK at SR2, you may get turned off the series simply due to the fact that a rather limited gameplay takes second place to the story.
In this sense, I would recommed starting at Soul Reaver 1, since it has much more superior gameplay, with the story still being quite great complementing it.

Of course, whilst being completely different game, Blood Omen is even better, so if GoG's gonna release that, I'd certainly start there.
Thanks for the responses guys. I found a plot guide on gamefaqs, so I will be reading it for more information should I decide to get the games.

EDIT: I actually played Blood Omen many years ago, but I am afraid I have forgotten most of the story already.

CaveSoundMaster: I had this problem too but there was a fix for that, though I don't remember right now what it was... but I had two whole playthroughs of the first blood omen on my windows xp, so after i applied all the fixes: it worked flawlessly. May depend on the hardware though. Or maybe you were unlucky :(

F4LL0UT: Sequiro has already provided a link to it. :)

He also mentioned that you need the Bink converter (for making the vids run properly I assume). Just check his post on the previous page.
Kinda crap you gotta go find fixes for the game id expect it to be ready to go from GoG hell i can just go download the Emulator and Rom for free if i wanted to go through the hassle of of finding fixes only reason most of us buy from GoG is so that we dont have to go through the hassle.

I think you are a bit confused.
We were referring to fixes are for Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain which is a game not yet released here. We weren't talking about Soul Reaver 2. It's fully patched and ready to go.

That being said, GOG does the best the can though on games, but they can only do so much and they can't always use fan made stuff that is only if the publishers allow it. So even after they release stuff, it may still have bugs or quirks based on individual systems people have. You can't fault GOG for that though. But they can sometimes work miracles. Take Soul Reaver 1 for instance I have the retail version but can't get it to work at all with patches and everything. Yet the GOG version works just fine for me.

While I agree with you about GOG doing as much as they can, I can't help but mention that SR1 sound is screwed on my system and I couldn't find no fix for that :P

Have you tried the unofficial patch for Soul Reaver 1?
