Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

Grargar: Risen is definitely not DRM-Free on Steam (It still has CEG). It is nowhere to be seen on the List of DRM-Free games on Steamwikia. Not sure about Amazon.
avatar
cmdr_flashheart: Someone would need to have it on Steam to check.

But yeah, I've seen several sources now which say that it's DRM-free on Amazon, but I don't know how since there's a huge GFWL sticker on the cover I see. But to think I could've gotten it DRM-free from Amazon all that time ago -.-

Found this on some , Spudsdude and spaceman both say that no cd key or DRM was observed. So..okay then.
according to http://www.drmdatabase.net/database

there're 2 versions (retail & a steam one) , the steam one has inert drm (Tages files are present but that's all)

that's a bit confusing i agree...

and see there -> http://steamcommunity.com/app/40300/discussions/0/882962139461536196/#c882962698568137272

cmdr_flashheart: I had to look up what you meant by DRM-free on Amazon, and I found this. I am still confused, how is DRM-free on Amazon and Steam.
Don't know about Steam but the Amazon version is just a DRM free installer, same as here. Not sure what you're confused about.

The game at release had TAGES DRM but it was patched out. Not sure the Amazon version ever used it, right now it's a simple DRM free installer with no patching required. Amazon even touted it as a "DRM free sale" when I bought it.

Games for Windows is not the same thing as Games for Windows LIVE. Games for Windows was just a PC boxed copy branding initiative.

Also Games for Windows LIVE is not always DRM. See: Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4 and others.

Can anyone tell me something about Risen problems?
Some reviews say that, from half, the game is rushed and the ending battle is horrible.. is that true?
Even combat difficulty seems quite unbalanced and level progression seems unpolished.
Do you know if there are mods on pc that fix such problems?

@ StingingVelvet: Thanks for clarifying. For some reason, Amazon has included a GFWL cover on the store page, which is I was wondering what's up. Also, their store description doesn't say anything about DRM-free, which is silly on their part!

And wow, a drm free database! This is what was missing from my life, thanks DyNaer :D

edit: it's been a while since I've dealt with either, but I think you're right about GFW and GFWL.

I liked the combat, it's just hard in the beginning because that is Piranha Bytes' style. And yeah the ending is rushed and kind of crap but that's after 40 hours of good stuff so... yeah.
*bought*
I am glad GoG has finally got this in, its a pretty good game (although the earthquakes in the game didn't like my old computer for some reason).
And bought for the second time (although what is this weird email from Alert_security@sify.com that suddenly cropped up in my work email account)

From the end of chapter 2 it does seem that they either ran out of creative steam or funds, yeah, though there are some redeeming parts in chapter 4 (as in, the last). The final battle is definitely not one of them though. But then again you'll probably spend most time in chapter 1, if you'll want to explore everything you can before advancing the story, which you should...

About combat, it's possible with anything, if you're tactical enough. Mages don't do too well, behind the curve throughout if you focus just on that, but with patience and tactics even a completely unskilled character (saving points for magic) can clear all but a few things, exploring nearly everything in chapter 1. And then of course later if you develop properly and end up with (in my case) wielding 2h swords in one hand and maxed ice magic, it feels pretty darn comfortable :D

Level progression... the annoying part for me was the exp loss on level up. May not add up to much, but really nagged me, seeing that when you got more exp at once than needed to level, that extra exp got lost. Kept trying to minimize this loss.

My character was a mage and was slaughtering everything after ten levels or so. It's very easy to become an uber-powered mage.

Hm... Not the way I play then. Assuming fire magic and lots of mana recovery stuff?

It was super long ago, never gonna remember specifics.
Thanks for the advice, guys, I bought it (the hole in my wallet burns...) and it feels immediately better than otherwise, did not expect such a difference. Thanks.
Risen is the only game I've found that scratches the Gothic (1,2) itch.
I love Risen. Logged 99 hours on that game and for me was a great experience. Not quite up there with Gothic 2, but really close. One improvement that I noticed in Risen was that combat was consistently challenging through the entire game. Highly recommended to anyone that isn't sure.
