Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

ekj7: Nope, my box looks different. It looks like this. The only difference between those photos and mine is that the cover of my box has an "Exclusif Xbox 360 et Windows" text on the front next to the "PC DVD" logo in the top-right. This is the Canadian version, hence the French on it.
Wow, that's some nasty misleading shit. What a trap.

ekj7: Pretty much every other game I've seen that requires an Internet connection does state so on the box. This seems to be an exception to the case. Excessively annoying though, as I refuse to install the steam client on my computer.
Yeah, I would be pissed to if that happened to me. I would just give back the game though, because at least in Europe that would be illegal.

On another note, I want to mention that the English translation is supposedly pretty good, which is surprising, seeing as the Gothic games were always horribly translated. Voice actors include Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies and Leda Headey.
Hmm.. Deep Silver joining the DRMFREE Revolution? Sorry, but I am very skeptical about that, specially coming from a company that is a confessed lover of the Steam DRM, even in the retail releases.

Nah! I think this is just a another case of a Shovelware release...

If Deep Silver REALLY believes in the DRMFREE REVOLUTION, they will release ALL their catalog and not just one game.

I guess one thing is that the phrase DRMFREE Revolution might just be an illusion. It's just a marketing phrase. In truth everyone just wants to make as much money as possible and only the ideas how to achieve this goal are different.

Obviously so far the idea is still that older games don't need DRM but younger games need. Apart from Witcher 2 or AoW3 which other AAA game has been released DRM free?

Define "AAA"..

Alan Wake was an expensive game to develop, and is DRMFREE...

New games like Shadow Warrior or Rise of the Triad are DRMFREE from scratch

Those two are independently published, so can't consider them exceptions because no publisher had to make one. (And hell, Namco made CDP put DRM into the retail release of W2...)
I decided to get this game yesterday, it is almost a different game from the Xbox version it's so much better, glad I decided to get it.

If JoWood can get on board, then I think anybody can.

The Witcher 3 will be DRM-free. Hopefully after the two Risen parts are released here, Risen 3 will also show up here.

Ooh this is quite interesting - apparently Deep Silver rebooted the 'The Humans' a couple of years back - I wonder if they've got the rights to the Amiga-era originals?

Do you know the good part?
It´s not important whether the big companies do believe in DRM-free-Gaming or not---the important part is just as simple as:
Do they release DRM-free Versions---or don´t they?

As long as enough folks resist the temptation to buy DeepSilver Games at Steam and, instead of that, by them here, it will work. Of course it would be ways better if we had some managers in Publishers Headquarters that would believe in DRM-free gaming. Or having laws that actually forces DRM-Plattforms to integrate an resale-market, which would cause DRM-free downloads (which definitivly can´t be resold, and stopping the resales is some major goal of the piblishers) to explode in little time.

But: As long as we can get indirect control via sales on GOG we should stay stick to that plan!

Risen? Shovelware? Doesn't seem that way to me.

Time will tell if/what other games we get from DS.

StingingVelvet: Great game. Smaller in scope that Gothic 2 but the same excellent RPGing.

I already had it DRM free on Amazon but I figured the soundtrack alone was worth $4, plus the convenience of having it on GOG. Thanks guys.

Hopefully some of Deep Silver's Steam only stuff comes here next.
How is the soundtrack?

I'm in the same boat; I bought it on amazon but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.
Though while writing this I realize I should just pull up Youtube and hear for myself.

I don't remember it being super special, but decent. For $4 my buy-in requirements were pretty low. I dislike how Amazon handles game libraries so it was worth $4 to trade up.
Ah finally, nice:)

Thank you GOG
