Here's to new beginnings!

Risen, a robust fantasy action-RPG from the Piranha Bytes studio, the developer behind the classic Gothic games, is now available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $3.99 for the next 48 hours to start a new epic adventure!

It all begins on a mysterious volcanic island. The heavy tremors on the island bode ill for its inhabitants. Ancient temples have risen from the ground recently, bizarre creatures are terrorizing the area. Fear and terror is spreading among the population. Is it the end of all hope? A group of powerful men who call themselves "The Inquisitors" have taken it upon themselves to put an end to these events. They send an expedition to this remote island, but a storm takes hold of the ship and destroys it at sea. It was foretold that a hero will come, and the fate played its marked cards to set the events in motion. As if by a miracle, you survive the shipwreck and are stranded on the volcanic island alone. You find yourself amidst a chaos of rebellion, tyranny, and mystic rituals. It is up to you to decide to which side the pendulum of fate will swing.

In the epic world of Risen, filled with mysterious earthquakes, fearsome monsters, and unimaginable treasures, forge your path with the sword, learn the art of staff fighting, or become a powerful mage. Delve into a gritty, raw, and atmospheric fantasy world in which every action has a consequence. The game comes from the German Piranha Bytes studio, the team who brought us all three classic iterations in the fan-favorite Gothic Series. Do you want to see how the creators of one of the most acclaimed RPGs could do with the power of the modern gaming machines? Now you can, and with the 48-hour special launch offer you'll be amazed by the value you get for just $3.99 of your money.

With the addition of Risen to our DRM-Free catalog, we welcome a new publisher, Deep Silver, onboard GOG.com! There's no better way to start a new beautiful friendship, than with an epic RPG, especially when it comes with a 60% launch discount, that will be available until Saturday, April 5, at 9:59AM GMT.

StingingVelvet: Physx is fucking a lot of games up on new machines, even if said games are only a few years old. Honestly you have to blame nVidia and no one else, because they're not keeping modern Physx drivers fully compatible with older games. nVidia used to be the star when it came to old game compatibility but they're falling down on the job these past couple years.
Can you give some examples? I'd like to try if I have the games.

Last one I ran into was Sacred 2. I think Two Worlds was another recent one, but I got that running eventually.

I don't have Sacred 2 but I do have Two Worlds. I just tested it and you were right, it doesn't run out of the box.

However, 1 minute of research was enough to learn that NVidia broke compatibility with older titles at around 2007 when they updated PhysX. They did release a set of legacy drivers though that can be installed in addition to the latest drivers to provide compatibility with older games. You can get them here and Two Worlds runs just fine with them.
This mostly unknown gem plays nearly exactly like Gothic 1 and 2. Great game, 4 stars.

Yeah, that's what I found eventually. If Sacred 2 needs the same thing it should already be installed, so I don't know what its problem was. I didn't want to play the game bad enough to figure it out.
Great release! Bought it right away.
I love, that the soundtrack is included, but I'd like to see the world map with the bonuses as well.
I quite like the look of this game. Is there time in my life for another RPG though.

JudasIscariot: According to our testlab notes, Risen works best with PhysX 9.09.0408 as it's more stable when using that version :)

Newer versions of PhysX tended to make the game crash when launching and gave us an error message about being unable to create physx sdk.
There might be something wrong with your testlab system. The PhysX drivers contained in 9.09.0408 are also in the newer driver packages. The updates have been cumulative with each version since around 2007. This is why we are all getting the message that we have newer drivers installed and the update won't proceed.

I don't understand how your people were able to install the old v9.09.0408 without getting the same message. If your system has newer PhysX drivers then something might have happened to them to screw it up. It should have been possible for your testlab to uninstall and reinstall the latest PhysX drivers to solve the problem.
Plenty of older games require the older physx drivers, this is nothing new. Installing the new physx drivers, even when they are supposed to have previous releases included, does not work with all games.

Basically you need to have the legacy driver installed (for this game and other oldies) and the up-to-date drivers (for newer games that require it).

You're welcome. Was worried after the initial sale everyone would have it.

oops. Nevermind. I was wrong with what I wrote here. I thought the legacy drivers were older than the ones that Judas mentioned but that's not true. Sorry.

However, I have never installed the legacy drivers or older and I have no problem with Risen. I cancelled the PhysX installer before it could execute. Others here tried to install but it would not proceed because installed drivers are newer.

svmariscal: Not really interested in this one, still have the 2 first Gothics untouched in my backlog... on the other hand, Deep Silver feature as publishers of ParaWorld, so here's hoping :-)
Indeed...and that one has a nasty drm which causes problems on other systems than XP....and a great game...i really hopy they bring it.

Knights of Honor is also in their collection and superb!

Fesin: On another note, I want to mention that the English translation is supposedly pretty good, which is surprising, seeing as the Gothic games were always horribly translated. Voice actors include Andy Serkis, John Rhys-Davies and Leda Headey.
Indeed it is. Maybe because it isn't a translation per se. English version was written as a separate screenplay alongside original. And voice acting is pretty good as well.

fracturedsanity: How is the soundtrack?

I'm in the same boat; I bought it on amazon but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.
Though while writing this I realize I should just pull up Youtube and hear for myself.

JudasIscariot: The soundtrack is quite epic, imo :)
Yes, the soundtrack is great.
