Pioneer the post-apocalyptic open world.

Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, a post-apocalyptic open world full of awe and danger, as imagined in a 1988 RPG, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com

They say that ever since the nuclear holocaust, America is no longer a place for heroes. They say, that it is no longer the land of the free. Know, that they've been lying to you. In the atomic wasteland of the year 2087, there is still room for bravery, justice, and order. There are men and women standing guard to what is left of civilized society, facing villains, mutants, bandits, and monsters on daily basis. When everyone else just gave up, they roam the ruins of our nation's sinful past, and do the impossible to bring law to the badlands. They are the Desert Rangers, and this is their story.

Back in 1988 Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic (or just Wasteland back then) took the fresh memory of living in constant fear during the Cold War, reached for the aesthetics of the Mad Max movies, added solid cRPG mechanics, and offered gamers an experience that would soon inspire a whole gaming sub-genre. Long before Mr. Ron Perlman announced to the world that "war never changes" in the iconic opening sequence to Fallout, the post-apocalyptic grim future was a vision already present and persistent in the minds of gamers. That was mostly because of Wasteland. The open-ended free-roam gameplay, paired with incredibly rich and suggestive setting made a lasting impression on everyone who dared to visit the nuclear desert. With challenging difficulty level and great variety of NPCs, quests, and locations, this fantastic title is still a blast to play!

Do you remember playing this title, or maybe you'd like to see how the gaming post-apo craze has begun? Pick the slightly updated version of Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, for only $5.99, on GOG.com.

F1ach: Do I need an emulator or anything for this or will it just work normally on win 7?
avatar
cyboff: no, if some game here on GOG uses some kind of emulator like dosbox or scumvm, it is always part of the GOG provided installer, you don't need to install anything else...
Thanks for that :)

Crosmando: All new GOG releases work on Win7, they wouldn't be selling them otherwise, it is running in a modified dosbox emulator but you don't need to do anything, just install and play
Cheer mate, have some rep for your help guys :)

FlamingFirewire: Is this officially the oldest game on here? Even though I might not purchase them, I hope to see more games pre-1990 here on GOG :)
nope Ultima 1+2+3 are as the gog version of Ultima 1 is the 1986 re-release while the original came out in 1980-1981, Ultima 2 came out in 1982 and Ultima 3 came out in 1983
Great to see this classic re-released on GOG!

Crosmando: The paragraphs don't automatically come up though, when you get one you'll get something like:
Read Paragraph 15...

And below it will be a little icon of a book, click that and they come up (with voice narration if you have that on)

Thanks! GOG's frontpage forum link doesn't show all the previous pages, and that threw me off.

deonast: Cool I backed number 2 so I have a choice of GOG or Steam to redeem for this one as a bonus. No choice really DRM free all the way.
Me too. Was glad they made that n option.
One of the greatest RPG classics on GOG ever. Wasteland is a game I always wanted to own, while at the same time wanted here on GOG for compatibility convenience. Ironically enough, I ended up owning it for free for backing the Wasteland 2 Kickstarter, while at the same time getting it on GOG with not only perfect compatibility, but also the several "modernizations" included in this version. The wait was definitely worth it... but damn, I gotta say this, you took your sweet time you bastards! ;-)
Just by mentioning Wasteland 2, I think the Wasteland 1 content page is suggesting a future GoG release. O_O
Ever wondered what Fallout would of looked like in 1988 if it was made instead of Wasteland?

LGR has posted a video review of Wasteland.
I have been playing this using dosbox on my tablet. it is super hard compared to new games, but still fun. cannot wait for the second part!
Does this mean we will also get Fountain of Dreams? I used to play that when I was a kid. I remember it being fun, but quite difficult. Anyone remember this game?

I tried it out semi-recently with dosbox and rather enjoyed myself, the art in FoD (particularly the animated portraits) is quite good and all enemies/NPC's have a unique portrait. The gameplay mechanics and engine are very similar to Wasteland, you level-up skills by using them or by learning in a library, IQ increases skill points, and combat seems to use D6's like Wasteland. Character creation however is a step backwards, you only get to customize attributes and unlike Wasteland there's no skill customization, you just pick a "class" with fixed skills. But then again the classes are kinda interesting, Medic, Hood (like a rogue/thief), Survivalist etc. One new thing are "mutations", your characters can be infected (or infect themselves) with radioactive items which can cause them to get a mutation, granting a special ability (which have negatives too).

Game is also very hard at the beginning, like ridiculously so, some rats can wipe out your guys in a few turns, but once you level-up it's not so bad. I screwed around in Miami for a while until I got to the Killer Clown base and was unable to even progress due to how overpowered they are.

I think it would be cool to have it on GOG, the best bet would be to have InXile buy it or something from Electronic Arts, though of course we have no idea what Brian Fargo's thoughts were/are on Fountain of Dreams, if he even played it. I think the whacky setting in post-apocalyptice Florida with the Voodoo cultists, Mafia, Killer Clowns etc was very fitting for Wasteland. I know many people didn't like it though, and it's definitely not as good as Wasteland, from what little I played the game world is much, much smaller than WL.

Still waiting on the patch to come here.
Ok ok the game is nice... I wish to buy it, but... for 5,99$? Okay it is the price of a hamburguer in macdonalds but... it feels too expensive, like 2,99 woulde be more fair...
It's a tad expensive for a 1988 title, even though it's a good game. Better value though if you've pre-ordered Wasteland 2 and get it for free
