Pioneer the post-apocalyptic open world.

Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, a post-apocalyptic open world full of awe and danger, as imagined in a 1988 RPG, is available for only $5.99 on GOG.com

They say that ever since the nuclear holocaust, America is no longer a place for heroes. They say, that it is no longer the land of the free. Know, that they've been lying to you. In the atomic wasteland of the year 2087, there is still room for bravery, justice, and order. There are men and women standing guard to what is left of civilized society, facing villains, mutants, bandits, and monsters on daily basis. When everyone else just gave up, they roam the ruins of our nation's sinful past, and do the impossible to bring law to the badlands. They are the Desert Rangers, and this is their story.

Back in 1988 Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic (or just Wasteland back then) took the fresh memory of living in constant fear during the Cold War, reached for the aesthetics of the Mad Max movies, added solid cRPG mechanics, and offered gamers an experience that would soon inspire a whole gaming sub-genre. Long before Mr. Ron Perlman announced to the world that "war never changes" in the iconic opening sequence to Fallout, the post-apocalyptic grim future was a vision already present and persistent in the minds of gamers. That was mostly because of Wasteland. The open-ended free-roam gameplay, paired with incredibly rich and suggestive setting made a lasting impression on everyone who dared to visit the nuclear desert. With challenging difficulty level and great variety of NPCs, quests, and locations, this fantastic title is still a blast to play!

Do you remember playing this title, or maybe you'd like to see how the gaming post-apo craze has begun? Pick the slightly updated version of Wasteland 1 - The Original Classic, for only $5.99, on GOG.com.

tfishell: That looks super-cool.
It sure does. Shame that some of those titles will never be re-released just because no one knows who is rightful owner of them

IAmSinistar: Nice to see this here, a true good old game as folks have said. Since it's debuting at full price I'll wishlist for now, since I suspect an Xmas sale is in the works. Not that that I think the base price is too much, but rather it's hard to justify adding to the backlog at the moment without the incentive of a discount.

You saint! Allow me to kiss those big carnivorous plant lips of yours.

Very much appreciate, mate!

I've traveled the world and the Seven Seas. Everybody's lookin' for something.
It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine. :)
I'm interested. Toggle'able old/new graphics/sounds, nice. I wonder if we can hot key that!
Now all I need is Fallout 3 and Fallout 3 Vegas on gog.com and it will be complete!

XYCat: what's the wasteland music?

Nergal01: A track composed by Mark Morgan. It was probably intended for Wasteland 2, originally, and it will probably give a pretty good indication as to what the music in Wasteland 2 will be like.

Here's the track:

Sounds cool, the dude's got a real talent for making interesting music. I loved his fallout soundtrack.
Sometimes higher-resolution art falls flat, like the Monkey Island updates. They look generic and sterile, and the higher resolution makes every shortcut and sloppy line stand out. Looking at GOG's screenshots, that hasn't happened here. The updated art matches the retro style and gets rid of the chunky, low-color EGA look.

How does the update handle "paragraphs"? The original would give you reference numbers to find descriptive text in a physical book. Are they built into the game now?

Hey! GOG doesn't release classics anymore! Only indie games! D:<
Cool! I want to pick this up just because I use to read Stackpole. I want to see what this game is all about.

This is why we come to GOG :D

Crosmando: The paragraphs don't automatically come up though, when you get one you'll get something like:
Read Paragraph 15...

And below it will be a little icon of a book, click that and they come up (with voice narration if you have that on)
