fortune_p_dawg: Well, it seems pretty freeform to be honest. You could be the benevolent protector of the skies and work with the whales to stop the badguys OR you could be an avian lord of terror who loots, plunders, and rides around in a whale corpse as to strike fear into the hearts of everything.

That said, I've mostly been just goofing off, and have only finished the first two quests, so yeah I could end up being Reginald 'Carver of Whales and Scourge of the Skies' if that's where the story takes me. But I usually play the goodguy, soooo...

Really cool game though. I think the targeting needs to be tightened up a bit, especially when mining, otherwise it's quite fun.
This game looks sweet, didn't even know about it.

zlep: I like the look of this game, but I find the idea of "minable" whales extremely disturbing (not helped by the way-too-graphic graphics). Anyone know if it's open-ended enough that I can just ignore that gamplay option?
As long as it's happening in a fictional game and not in RL, all is permitted (though I admit a personal bias toward intellectually stimulating games).

Trust me, I've played enough role-playing games and seen players do crazy shit they would never do in RL to know that usually, nothing harmful comes out of fiction besides fun and thought experiments unless the work of fiction actively tries to send out a serious message (a lot of games tends to be too out there and fun oriented to do so).

I'd worry more about what we are doing in RL instead.

EDIT: Besides, the game seems to be killing two birds with one stone by sending a message about over-fishing AND our heavy reliance on fossil fuels.

How is the crafting / building aspect of the game? The trailer focused a bit on the Contra style action - is there a nice level of building or is it more of an optional activity? I'm not looking for Minecraft levels, where that IS the point of the game, but I curious if construction and crafting take a central role...

Any info from early buyers, or should I take this to the game specific forums?

Well, supposibly everything you see is buildable but considering you move around with airship (except when you explore floating islands), the airship is what you mostly build, upgrade and modify. It's essentially your base of operations so unless it's possible to buy entire airships, it's required activity. Mind, this is based on watching videos on youtube.

Here's couple of videos of the game that show more about the gameplay:

For those already playing, how's the difficulty?
Right up my alley.

Is the game 'complete' as it is or is there more content still planned or being added ?
A bit too expensive for a spontaneous purchase, but this looks really interesting. I think I'll wait for some reviews, but I'll keep an eye on this one.

( Is the whole sky whale "mining" a requirement for progress in the game? Because that doesn't sound quite right. :P )

Wishbone: Hmm, sounds like I might want to hold off on buying this for a while, to see if they address some of the issues raised in that review. "Brutal difficulty" certainly isn't a selling point for me.
avatar
Fever_Discordia: And the main character is a meat block magically brought to life (maybe) in Super Meat Boy!

Yeah but
"The first game to include minable sky whales, and meat blocks."
First one to include both, at the same time and simultaneously and everything!
avatar
Wishbone: Technically, yes. The Aether mod for Minecraft actually does include sky whales, but as far as I know, they are not minable, so...
You can hit them with a pickaxe, can't you? :P

Depends on the type of narrative involved.

It works with a redemption narrative, where you start off having to mine whales and later on stop after you find a better way.

And I know what you mean about the price.

The game looks interesting enough that it would probably have been a instant 10$ buy to play it now, but I'm on the fence at 13.50$.

I don't think you can, actually. I think they're ethereal, so the pickaxe just passes through them. At least that's how it was back when I played it, but a new major version of the mod came out a while ago which I haven't relly played yet, so they might be minable now.
seems pretty terraria-y/starbound-y but, all the more enticing for it, wish-listed fo-sho! Is the whole go-green message as heavy-handed in-game as it is in GOG's write up? I haven't even played the game yet and I already feel nearly bludgeoned to death by it.

Yes, that's pretty much exactly what I thought. Optimal pricing is a science, isn't it?

*looks at your icon* And here I would have figured you'd be all for going green. :|

Unfortunately, I think many distributors keep their numbers as confidential as possible (as indicated by the developer of Defender`s Quest concerning their Steam sale numbers).

One would hope they at least crunches all those sale numbers they keep private into relevant statistics which they can present to game developers when setting up prices.

And yet, we`re not doing nearly enough to stabilize our ecosystems...

Personally, I'm all for reminding people on a daily basis that they are screwing the ecosystem they live in and depend on with their lifestyle.

Let it be alive in the mind of people, because I guarantee you that economists and financial types will remind to people the short to mid-term economical benefits of hijacking the environment to make a buck on a daily basis.
