I'm sure this has been addressed before, more than once, but I just got to say that I think that this repeated downreping of certain people is contemptible. I've seen it happen to SimonG many times and I think it is both mean and cowardly. If you think that SimonG is arrogant, a smartass or you just disagree with him you should put up an argument against his, not be some coward that throws rocks in the dark.
Downreping is not much of a censorship since my guess is that most people like me get curious when they see that a post is downreped, and click on it to see why. But when it is repeated against the same person over a longer amount of time it is more like harassment than any good-natured form of interaction.
Now someone is behaving the same way against Keeveek. It is quite lousy. And I'm not even talking about downreping as a way to give feedback to a certain post (although there are far better ways to do this), I'm talking about the general downreping of posts from certain persons regardless of the post itself.

I agree with you completely. I only ever down rep to report spam, otherwise it's a useless gesture.

But I'm not particularly surprised, as many people on this forum are petulant children.
maybe if they implemented a function that lets people ignore certain users this would end downrepping menace?

We just need a "repless" mode where you don't see rep and you can still report spam. Easy money.

Rep... Can someone tell me why you care about that again? I forgot.
I completely agree, which is why I sometimes upvote people who I don't think deserves the
downvote.

There was this one poor soul (forgot his name) who fled the community because of the downvoting
of his posts making him feel unwelcome. Sure he may have goofed up initially but he was sorry and
was a kid.

Its not always about rep, someone being continuously targeted for downvoting does
not a welcoming community make.

That whole negative reputation thing is poison for any community. By now, everyone should understand that downvoting not only does nothing to serve its intended purpose, that is to discourage trolling and the breaking of forum rules, it actually has the opposite effect. Gamerager is just the most prominent example of a user who couldn't bear the downvoting of his posts and went insane, to the detriment of the quality of the forum.

And then , of course, there are the people who simply downvote posts they don't agree with.

Just get rid of the silly system and give us the option to report spam or stuff that blatantly breaks the forum rules, that's all we need.

Somebody just downrepped you :P
And the OP is buried already.

Wasn't that the guy that came in here and his first post was asking someone to give him Assassin's Creed 3?
This topic could give the Steam bashing one a run for it's money on repetitiveness.

How do you tell the difference between downreping done because someone strongly disliked what they had to say and downreping done regardless of the post itself?
Yes!

As has been pointed out, some people like to continue to down-rep people no matter what they're saying, because they get a bug up their butt or just don't like someone for some reason, and thus it gets abused.

I vote for elimination for the whole process, but if we must have something, I think it would be better to just have "+" rep - if you like what someone says and think it's worthy, give it a plus. If you don't like what someone says, you don't get to do anything except make your smart-ass comments. :-) No need to tear someone down by taking something (however insubstantial) away from them.

That's another beauty (sarcasm) of the setup; you can't. Unless people specifically explain it in their responses, which they often don't.

Probably, but I don't frequent the ninja/gifting threads so I didn't see the post in question. I do know he made a girl v. boy forum game, which did not go over very well. Whatever he did, I get the feeling he really was sorry for it judging by his apology thread and then people apparently dug up his sins on other forums. There are people here who are very unforgiving as several people here can attest.

Agreed
Hiding a post and down-repping a post should be separate things.

It happens to me sometimes, but then again sometimes I say stupid shit. The key really is to just not care. Be yourself, be nice to people, let things roll. Don't sweat the small stuff.
