Nice set for PC only gamers.

I might get the collection on steam since it has some games not on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection(Alien Soldier, Bio-hazard Battle, Crackdown, Eternal Champions, Landstalker, Light Crusader, Sword of Vermillion, Wonder Boy).
I have the PS3 version of the genesis/megadrive set. I like the presentation, the games run just as they should, and it was an easy platinum trophy (I know, I know. I just have a trophy rival I need to beat) but it lacks Toejam and Earl, and despite having some master system games it doesn't have Wonderboy 3: the Dragons Trap.

I wish one of the online retail places would start offering the latter for pc or ps3 via emulation, be it steam, gog, anywhere. I'm pretty sure I'd pay full retail value to play it again legally, I got excited when I saw Wonderboy 3 on steam but it's some phony version from the megadrive.
Yeah, seems like the Steam collection with some extra games (Sonic, VF2, etc).

I skipped on the $9.99 sale on Steam since I already owned half of them from purchasing packs 1 & 4. And may I say, while the emulation quality is good, that program has THE WORST LOADER FRONT END IN EXISTENCE.

Who the hell thought CD-Player style controls were appropriate for picking which game to play? Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next-> Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next-> Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next->Next (Yay, finally got to the game I wanted!)

The disc version has all the games in a grid and you click the one you want... 4 pages of grids.

carnival73: I wonder if it too has left out Toe Jam and Earl 1 & 2.

Steam had a deal this weekend for yet another Genesis collection which seemed to contain 40 games, but not all those listed in this post.

As for the emulation discussion, I'm not sure which emulator Sega is using now, if it's homemade or just a clever frontend to one of the existing ones. I recall buying a collection with Sonic CD, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic R and Sega Super Smash pack (which contained Sonic 2). The smash pack was actually running a renamed version of KGen using encrypted romfiles.

Still it's nice to get good bundle deals on classic games. I really liked the way the Taito legends 1 and 2 were done for PC, including the roms able to get loaded directly into MAME (if you found the right version). Quite entertaining to consider that Taito Legends 2 used Starforce copy protection, but that was just the frontend and emulator (which didn't support any of my gamepads). So yeah, while a nice frontend for these collections is a nice thing, I'd go with the guys who'd like the collection to contain the files able to load into your emulator of choice, if for no other reason than the options that grants you.

Yeah, we were discussing that ripoff package in a few other threads. (All these games were listed and anyone who bought the set didn't get the Sonic or Toe Jam & Earl games. Steam later removed the games from their news post.)

I uh, obtained the first set of games via torrent a while back to try 'em out and found the emulator to be decent, but not up to par with Kega. Some parts were slow on my system. Whoever did this didn't optimize the emulator's video display for crappy PCs like mine. And I do remember Steve Snake's emulator be used on those older Sega discs, I have a copy of Sonic & Knuckles Collection that includes it!

As for using legal copies of games... eh. I don't think it's worth it. I do own a few game collections for consoles but don't think extracting the games is worth the trouble.
I ordered it last week and it just arrived today. Apparently the retail version uses starforce. Here's the relevant part of the Protection ID log :

It also tried to run something called appdrvrem01.exe at the end of the setup process, which is apparently tied to Starforce. I am now sad =(

Guess I'll install it on my old crappy PC. No way I'm getting my clean PC infected with Starforce.
I said it was a disc-check, I didn't inspect it to see what brand of disc-check it was. Honestly I don't care myself, but I know many do.
I tried to find information on the DRM/copy protection in the retail version before buying it, but I couldn't find anything. Heck, it's not even stated in the EULA. If I could be bothered, I might be trying to see if I could sue them for this right now.

I don't think disc-checks were ever disclosed, were they?

Can't remember ever seeing them disclosed either. I know there was a lawsuit filed against Ubisoft for their use of Starforce a few years back, but it was about potential damage to the system it was installed on, not about non-disclosure. Don't know if it was ever resolved but it probably had a big influence on Ubisoft's decision to stop using Starforce.

Anyway, I'm not about to try suing Sega over the non-disclosure of the DRM in their 40$ compilation, my energy is better saved for more constructive endeavors.
