I am guessing this is right before the new website officially launches
Anyone still on the fence about buying their ships, RSI have given a sort of cutoff date. I haven't purchased my ships yet but will in 8 days. So tell all your friends if they want to get in on the opportunity.

Digital Mercenary package and above gives you Alpha & Beta access also...

I backed mr. Roberts's game on the campaign launch, but now he's really starting to annoy me with all that insurance nonsense!!!!
What's next, a package to get tax returns????
edit:

Cool, I missed the campaign launch. I was on the fence wanting to see more. Those Wingman's Hanger videos helped sway me.

Oddly enough there was talk about being required to pay a tax to house your ships in-game if you didn't outright own the building they were housed in. Maybe I can park them in the desert instead...

Are you on the Star Citizen Base forums?

Opportunity for what? I couldn't really tell even after reading that page. Lifetime insurance? Who? Where?

Is this game now becoming some kind of MMO, with the claims of "social features" on that page and such? EDIT: Ok, there's a part "Is Star Citizen an MMO?" in the FAQ...

What will I lose if I simply wait until the game is released, and buy it then? "Lifetime insurance?" I have travel and car insurance already.

EDIT: So is the ingame "insurance" some kind of cheat code then which makes the game easier?

"Pilots in Star Citizen can purchase insurance policies for their ships, modifications and cargo. This ensures that your ship will be replaced and/or its modifications and cargo will be subsidized should you be destroyed in a fight or accident."

Insurance is just to replace your ship when it explodes or gets wrecked. From the way the game is coming along, it sounds like dying will happen a lot. Especially going up against ships armed to the teeth.

A lot of the Star Citizen backers are also EVE Online players. They have been in many, many space battles. Many are pirates, mercenaries, bounty hunters and part of large corporations and armies.

Lifetime insurance is going to be a good thing if I can't catch my prey or discover something "out on the Rim" to fund my ventures.

And besides I could run into some kind of race similar to the Shadows out in space and end up like Starfury pilot Kester.

So I settled on:

MISC Freelancer
Origin 300i
Anvil Hornet

Now comes the wait for news of the ALPHA.

That is a very nice selection of ships. I myself got the Freelancer package, but I haven't bought anything extra. But that may change with the Origin 300i sale this Friday.

Just as a word of warning to anyone interested in Star Citizen, as long as you have bought something before the launch of the new site, you will have lifetime insurance for every single ship you buy until November, when the funding drive ended. So if you're on a fence, but already have some basic package, you can still wait.
I only backed for the single player campaign or something like that, hoping for something like X3. What I'm really looking forward to is X-Rebirth, if it sucks, I can always fall back to X3TC and AP.
It seems like lifetime insurance for a starter ship is quite redundant, since the majority of the game will presumably be played with higher level ships. Am I missing something?
it's not redundant. each of the ships are moddable.

I was sold on the Aerospace Anvil Hornet the moment I watched the physics demo video. Chris Roberts was using a D-Pad to illustrate the maneuverability of the ship. Just wow. It's like flying a Starfury :o]

And like has been mentioned. Even if you have a higher end ship it doesn't mean you'll win. Chris Roberts has stressed it is a skill based game, no leveling. So start practicing your piloting or experience permadeath.

What I'm hoping to see addressed in a future Wingman's Hangar episode is this:

Can I fly my ship down to the planet not assisted by a computer AI, experiencing re-entry phyiscs along the way?

I am curious about the Origin 300i sale on Friday now....

I was imagining this as a single player game, but with comments like
"Fully dynamic economy driven by player actions

If too many people fly iron ore to the smelting plants of New Pittsburgh, steel prices will drop. Buy low… sell high… you hope."

It's not really looking like it? Does this mean it's a shared persistent world, and other plays will affect it, whether I'm playing with them or not?

I imagine it'll be a 'connect to servers' type game then, not a game you play on your own computer with saves and everything? The lifetime Insurance would seem to reinforce that I guess...
The only saving will be in Squadron 42 the single player part of the Star Citizen universe. And there is no save during mission. You die, you start from that mission beginning.

Does that mean you spent almost $300 on virtual ships for a game that isn't out yet, or am I reading the site wrong?

Edit: Just noticed the thread was sort of necro'd, but I'm still curious.

That is correct

And it's not dead, I've just been unable to answer until tonight. I have to run again.
