I'm looking to buy Majest in the next little while and Gog.com does not have it :( I was wondering what other users experiences have been on Steam and GamersGate. They both carry the game, although apparently there are a bunch of add-ons or expansion packs that are sold separately.

I'll be running on Windows 7

The price is not as big a deal as how the buying experience is from each seller. If it costs a little more from one, but it has great support I would rather that.

Please let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!
I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that multiplayer works only on STEAM for Majesty 2. (buy the complete collection, it will have all micro-DLCs, too).

or maybe the multiplayer was fixed later, I don't know.

First of all, are we talking about Majesty 1 or 2? Majesty 1 is only sold as a "gold pack", which contains both the core game and its expansion. Both Gamer's Gate and Steam has the HD version these days, which is new computer friendly, and this is the game that I would recommend that you get first. Not because of any story importance, but because it is a better game.

In the end Steam or Gamer's Gate are about equal, as far as service goes. They are both a bit slow to respond to support tickets, but apart from that, I've not had any issues with either one. Which service you chose to use will in the end depend on if you want to use the Steam client or not (Steam forces you to use a client, which can be both a convenience (you have everything collected in in place, and it is easy to just (re)download and install games through it, and it has a chat interface), and an inconvenience (it can take some system power, and its offline mode can, for some games, be a bit spotty), Gamer's gate on the other hand is clientless, you just download the games from their site)
I bought Majesty 2 last week as it was on offer for £1 on Gamersgate for the week, yet to play it though. It does come with a key on the right side of the screen so no doubt it will ask for that if you want to try multiplayer side of things. I went for Majesty 2 as apparently it is a little friendlier and easier to get to grips with. There is also a patch under the key on Gamersgate, no patch notes but no doubt it will have the fixes for multiplayer.

Steam version you will have to have Steam running to play the game but will keep the game up to date automatically whenever a new patch lands for it. Gamersgate version just installs like any disc based product. In all honesty its down to preference and who has it cheapest I would say if you are just wanting to try it out.

Actually, it is the other way around. While Majesty 2 is better at explaining its concepts, it is a more challenging game, and it has a far steeper difficulty curve. Many of the expansion levels are so hard that they feel downright unfair.

eep!!

Might fire it up today thinking on it, got it installed ready to play. I believed that it was easier to get to grips with from reviews round the web hence why I got M2. Ah well, it looks nice the rolling demo, as long as it has a decent tutorial I should be ok.....I hope!
In a nutshell: Weigh independence against social networking features. If you prefer the first, choose GamersGate. If you prefer the second, choose Steam.

Personally, I'd choose GamersGate, since it allows me to archive my games in a way that I don't depend on any thrid party (or an internet connection) when I want to re-install and/or play them. Therefore, GamersGate also can't take the game away from me, which Steam could.

The networking features of Steam are of zero value to me (I actually regard them as an annoyance), but my experience with them is rather limited, so you'll probably better ask a Steam user if you're interested in this aspect. :)

The two games are actually very different in many other ways. Majesty 2 is a more of a "game", you have a clear goal, and often a relatively clear path to the goal, while Majesty 1 is more about building up your kingdom and taking care of your heroes. This is also quite clear in how the heroes are handled. In Majesty 2, the heroes have relatively limited personalities, and all feel more or less the same, on the other hand, you need to have better control over them in order to be able to actually beat the missions. In Majesty 1 the heroes have stronger wills of their own, and do what they want, when they want it, and this allows for a less rigid mission design (though there is a far larger luck factor involved). So even if you don't like Majesty 2, make sure to give Majesty 1 a chance.
I found both games to be good, and don't regret buying Majesty 2 and its expansions, but Majesty 1 is the game that I keep coming back to.
Thanks for the responses! Majesty 1 is the game I was referring to, but I imagine I'll get Majesty 2 eventually. I think I'm leaning towards Steam because I like the idea that my purchase is stored there so if I get a new computer I can redownload it easily.

I fell in love with the Majesty game when it came out. I loved how the player didn't have complete control of the map. It is a much different style game to the RTS or TBS games I usually play.

Thanks again!
I prefer Gamersgate. The customer support is better, though it can be quite slow. They're also more willing to bend over backwards for the customer.

While I agree that in this regard Steam may be a bit easier, GG also stores your games and you can download them as many time as like.

If the game you get have some sort of DRM with activation limits, it is tends it be a bit easier to get more activations from GG then Steam.
Stop it right there!

Majesty Gold HD is avaible for FREE on gamersgate VOID (you have to watch a commercial or two before playing, but it's a full game)

ok, I don't know if it's HD edition, because it's misleading. Game cover implies it's HD edition, but game name, it's just majesty gold classic.

I can confirm that. GamersGate support can be a bit slow to respond (though that seems to be very common among digital download stores), but so far, every single issue I had has been solved to my satisfaction. I even got free games from them. :)
I buy a lot of games on Gamer's Gate and have never had a problem. Love them, plus their weekend sales are amazingly cheap!!

BTW, bought Majesty 2 when it was on sale a couple of months ago. Awesome game. You'll love it.

Agree with what others say about Steam. I refuse to buy anything there as, if anything happened to the site or they just decide to, you could lose everything you bought at the drop of a hat. And......their downloading program etc. takes up a MASSIVE amount of space. Can you tell I hate Steam? :)

Your purchase is linked to your account on both GG and Steam, much like how it works for GOG, and neither service has a download limit of any kind. Actually, if you get a new computer, you need to confirm to steam that it is in fact your computer that it is detecting (this is a security feature, to prevent hackers from quickly claiming other people's accounts), and the confirmation email can be a bit slow, so for people who often switch hardware, GG is more convenient.
