E3 is on it’s dawn. Lots’ of new things announced but we’d like to remind you about some Good Old Games you can play right now.
This week’s weekend promo is all about Strategy First catalogue, and we're putting a flat 50% off rebate on all titles, that includes cream of the crop turn based strategies like for example the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/jagged_alliance_2]Alliance . If you’re not a fan of squad based mercenary action, take a look at [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/disciples_2_gold]both of the Disciples titles. If the fantasy world is what you like but you're more of a direct person check out Sacred Gold, action RPG with an engaging story line.
After defeating various beasts and monsters maybe chill in your own spaceship ? Darkstar One is a space adventure sim.

Maybe you’re looking for a more managerial approach, if yes we’ve got something right for you.
You can choose from a more medieval setting in Patrician 3 or Port Royale 2.

After all of that serious stuff with those games, maybe kick back on your chair and enjoy some arcade madness with this series of [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/pro_pinball_fantastic_journey]Pinball ! Or just smash someone to bits in [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/flatout]FlatOut, a thrilling racer with fully destructible cars and environments ;)

For the full listing of all games including (simulations like Apache vs. Havoc see the promo page).
Have any of you guys played FlatOut without a gamepad? If so, is it still a sweet ride? I guess I'm just too old for gamepads. I was a pro with Mario Brothers and Nintendo original, but these new fangled gamepads with 10 or 12 or whatever buttons, look as though they were built for aliens to me

Aliens Aliens everywhere! :p

Another Great Promo GOG! =)

EDIT: Nevermind on the question, I see that GOG reccommends the gamepad for it so, I guess I'll leave it to all you aliens out there...That's right you gamepad alien freaks! :-p

Leroux: ow end, from 2007). ;)

Anyway, I remembered the game I played and liked was "Disciples: Shattered Land" - and that's also the cheaper of the two. Are there significant differences in the gameplay between Disciples and Disciples 2 or does the latter just have better graphics and a few new features? If they are more or less the same, I'm considering buying Disciples for 2.99; if I like it, I can still buy Disciples 2 another time, maybe even at full price. If I hate it, I lost 2 dollars less (but in that case I'm done with the genre once and for all, he he).
The features of both games are very similar, Disciples 2 is the more modern so its graphics are more easy on the eye of newer gamer than those of the original. Gameplay wise the biggest difference is that in Disciples 1 units gain experience and level up, but only have around 3 or so levels (each level they evolve and you can, for some, choose between two options for the evolution - the choice based on building a structure in your main base - but you only get to make that choice once so you can only follow one upgrade path). In the second game even once units reach their max upgrade level via evolutions they will still level up thereafter if they gain enough XP.
Note this is different for the captains who level up to higher ranks in both games by default.

Campaign play in both games is similar - with unit caps on each level and with the option to carry over one captain from mission to mission (with the playstyle of the game this is typically your best one each time).

The biggest difference though is that the first game has 4 races whilst the second introduces a 5th race (wood elves) in one of the expansions. This gives you a whole new army to play with.
I'd personally go for the second game since it just offers you more, for what is (in the promo) a very small increase in cost.

The only downside to the second game is that Strategy First decided to release all the expansions as standalones - which was an odd choice considering that two of the three were simply mission packs for two races in each pack (they were also released later in a single pack containing all the missions called Galleons return and I think this is the pack GoG ships with). This can make the game pretty big on install if you install all of the original and the mission pack and the Rise of the Elves (which adds the new race). Personally I'd just install the Rise of the Elves :)

tburger: I own all 'must-haves' from that list..

Lexor: Can you share your list? :D As I said I think all games are good+, so I have hard time deciding now.
That list is quite short, you know :-)
I own all Jagged Alliance games, DarkStar One and Port Royale 2 (but this realy doesn't count because I got it as a gift from gog). I'm sure I'll pick Flatout, Apache vs ..., Comanche vs... at a certain moment but right now I preffered to complete my Jagged Alliance collection by purchasing JA: UB by Interplay.
Sorry - I don't think that helps you much ...

Well, it helped a bit, because Im thinking about DarkStar One - is that game good in your opinion? Some people say it reminds Privateer, is that true?

overread: *snip*
Thanks for the detailed info about Disciples! I tried both demos and liked what I saw, so I could also see myself getting the two of them. I just can't tell how long my interest in them will really last, heh, but what's good about them is that I can start playing them on "easy" mode and the combat and building options are simple enough and attractively presented; almost like playing a RPG. ;)

What I noticed though is that the breaks between turns in Disciples 2 were pretty long. I managed to speed things up a little by turning off the Autosave function but I still had to wait at least 5 seconds after each turn while the computer was thinking. Is that normal or an indication that my PC is having slight issues with the game? Is not that much of a problem but I believe in the long run those 5 seconds might add up to something really annoying ...

Leroux: 5 seconds might add up to something really annoying ...
Naw I wouldn't worry about it at all - 5seconds thinking and action time is nothing at all in a turn based game - I've yet to see any where the computer makes an instant choice and movement.
Now if it was going into long minutes of thinking and processing time then I'd be worried that something was a miss.

True. I believe by the end in Disciples 1 it took minutes for the computer to finish its turns on large maps with multiple opponents. On my poor Pentium 3 at least...

Stopped playing Disciples 2 on my 1.3GHz laptop because it looked to be turning into that as well.
I'm thinking about buying one or two of these during the promotion, but the list is kind of intimidating. I'd like to try something different.

What games from this promotion have people tried and NOT liked? I find it is often more helpful to hear why a person doesn't like a game, rather than just hearing fans talk about how great it is. Obviously this is more useful if you don't simply hate the genre. Not much point saying you disliked the racing game if you just hate racing games. Also, try to avoid saying that a game just sucks. Instead, just say why you didn't really enjoy a title. People can then decide if your concerns are ones that they are likely to share. If not, it actually works like a positive review.
I bought Ghost Master.

I'm not going to buy anything else, they're too... strategery for my liking.
There is only one game I'm on the fence about on the list (that I've played, I've not played them all) and that is Strategic Command: European Theater - the demo was enjoyable and its a good solid strategy game for the fans. But - its just so - eh dull in presentation. I've seen far worse and it certainly has a style to its presentation - but I just can't get over the fact that I can load up Advanced Wars (Gameboy colour edition) and its just -- better visually.
Ive bought Pro Pinball Brusa and Fantastic journey.

Money well spent!

A great diverse list of games. I'll be picking up seven of these gems. Thanks GoG

Hehe, I can tell that you wouldnt like the Silent Storm games (not available on gog, but I hope they will be) Which is in my opinion the best tactics games ever made (Its similiar to the Jagged Alliance games that are in this promo)... With one problem. The computer sometimes takes a million, billion, trillion HOURS to make its turn :P

Sacred is not "Strategery". It's more "Diabloii".

It's actually a pretty fun game, though the enemy groups that respawn whenever you go a couple screens can get annoying. I got more fun out of the game than I did out of Torchlight, for example.

I'm going to give Jagged Alliance 2 a try. Heard lots about it, but haven't played it yet.
