A few months ago I bought an original NES, after which I did some research on the NES' library for possible additions to my new collection.

It dawned on me that sidescrollers were the first person shooters of the late eighties.

Also, Angry Video Game Nerd. :)

When Batman, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age are through having words with you, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed one and two, and The Force Unleashed had something they wanted to add.

StonerMk2: Haha, oh man i love my N64 and honestly play it more often then i play my PS3 or Original Xbox. Between Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Command and Conquer 64, and Conkers Bad Fur Day, never a dull moment for me. N64 is probably my most loved console.
Don't Forget Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64 & Super Smash Bros.

The N64 was a better console than most give it credit for

Yeah, I was kind of running out the door at that point and didn't really get a chance to elaborate. Single player games still sell very well, but "doesn't have multiplayer" is always considered a drawback in reviews, even with all the above titles. It's not a hard and fast rule, but I'd say it's a bigger consideration for most people these days than graphics.

Don't forget Space Station Silicon Valley and Star Fox! Incredible console.
The SNES and Megadrive games i spent large chunks of my time plugging away at have held up amazingly well. The phantasy stars, Warriors of the Eternal Sun, Mario and Metroid and the rest are just as attractive and playable.

The games i could never sit down with again would probably be most of the PSOne games. I remember my mate loading up Twisted Metal, a game that was a favourite in our flat, years later and it was just unplayable to us, along with some other of our PSOne faves. Revisiting some of the PS2 titles can also be a bit of a shock when you have gotten used to HD visuals and take them for granted.
I will always be able to go back to Sonic 1-3 and Morrowind, but games like CoD I play once then never again.

I have tried to sit and play them, too, but once that "new game feeling" wears off a lot of games just lose their appeal to me.
To be honest, I haven't given Xeen a complete or fair run - I only tested it to make sure it worked.

But when I look back, we were put through some heavy perserverence back when I was twelve

It was a different type of gaming. You had to have the attention span of a hawk and now, as I'm older, I think that is most of the problem - I no longer have that attention span or patience to obsessively memorize bullet patterns or grind levels in one spot over and over again.

Some older games are really good, a lot are just good memories.

Most of the games back in the old days were shit, must like today. Only difference is that the good ones have survived while the shitty majority has faded into obscurity. This can be demonstrated beautifully by downloading a NES emulator and about half its library in ROM form. You'll find that while there are a select few gems, the vast majority are pieces of shit.

Me and a friend of mine had a blast with Muscle Things Wrestling back on the NES but I REALLY could not suggest this title to anyone else on the planet.

If you really want to hurt yourself you should look up a ROM for Athena.

sethsez: A gorgeous game without multiplayer will sell like crap.

Lhademmor: Batman: Arkham Asylum would like to have a word with you

Overall, though, I agree, and I find it a shame because I much prefer a fleshed-out, interesting single player campaign to multiplayer deathmatch regardless of genre.
I know Fallout 3 and New Vegas were utter bombs. Hell, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow didn't make a penny.

Damn, even that POS, TFU2 probably made money last year. I can't think of a more vapid statement than one that single player games with no multi don't sell.

And to the OP's point, we haven't seen graphics hyped because current gen consoles are damned old by now. How can you talk about graphics when you can get by with engines that came out in 2004?

Watch when the new console revisions start getting hyped, graphics will suddenly become important to people again, because the press will tell them it is.

this

games today are really not that different today than they were 20 years ago

There were always brilliant games made with passion and dedication but 80-90% of the games were nothing but souless, cheap, worthless cash-ins made purely to capitalise on Different Fads/Trends/Gimmicks

I'm sure anyone over 20-25 can remember how almost every single game back in the 90's had to be Either a platformer/sidescroller or a Fighting game. Right now we have the same thing happening with FPS
