What was the name of the game that had the "Cast 'Heal' on 'Undead' type enemies to cause damage" mechanic? I find myself trying it in every game I can just to see if it works.

Temple of Elemental Evil and Neverwinter Nights are two.

I have only seen that in the Final Fantasy games. There are others but remembering them all is difficult at best.

Quite a few games have used that mechanic. Off the top of my head most D&D based games use it, the Final Fantasy series and a fair number of other JRPGs use it, and the King's Bounty games used it as well.

Septerra Core had that.

I remember you could do it in Final Fantasy, and a few of the D&D's let you as well. Seems to be a lost concept on modern game makers.

I'm not talking about "Holy/Light/Life Magic v. Evil/Dark/Death Magic", I'm talking about an undocumented gameplay mechanic where a player accidentally placed the spellcasting cursor over an enemy skeleton or zombie while casting Heal, and it caused major damage, and the player was like "Whoa! I have to tell everyone!".


I think Final Fantasy VII (I know there are other FF's, but this is the only one I ever played) might be the one I'm thinking of. Especially with resuscitation items.

Warcraft III

Yeah, could instakill any enemy (even bosses) that had the "undead" tag with a "phoenix down". I'm pretty sure that mechanic is rather widespread in jRPGs.

I've seen it used in Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre too.

The absolute first game to have that mechanic was probably Final Fantasy 1. That's the game that pretty much started the popularity of RPG games in the United States (I'm not sure if there was a Dragon Quest before Final Fantasy was released in Japan). I really can't think of any similar RPG games to have come out before it aside from the board game Dungeons and Dragons...... which... maybe.... might..... but I don't know, I've never played it.

in general I wish there was more freedom to do what you wanted to who you wanted during battle, more often than not games now a days have got everything locked into offensive spells being only castable on enemies while defensive spells are locked to allies.

Didn't Septerra Core have it?

I wonder if you can do that in Skyrim? I seem to recall something about that, but maybe it was just specialized spells. Anyway, I do remember that from NWN quite well.
