I am a big fan of strategic war games. It is one of the reasons I have stayed loyal to PC gaming all these years and never drifted toward console systems.

But one grip I have is in the lack of diversity in War gaming. They tend to cover the same few conflicts over and over (especially the games that have come out since 2000). So if any of you are like me and are looking for a new conflict to explore in war gaming I thought we fellow war gamers on GOG could help each other out.

So I was thinking that people could post the name of a conflict that they would see a war game cover. Then if any war games out there know of a game about that conflict you can recommend it to us.

The only ground rules about recommendations are:

1. The game must be fun and well made.

2. The game must be primarily about the conflict in question (so Panzer General II would not count for the Winter War, and Europa Universal cannot cover every conflict that crops up in early modern European history).

3. The game must be a strategic and historically accurate war game.

4. Mods do count as long as they fit the first three criteria.

So here are some of the conflicts I would like to see a decent war game cover:

1. The Vietnam War, surprisingly I am not aware of a single strategic war game about the Vietnam War

2. World War I, there are a few out there but I have never played one that was any good

3. The Russo-Japanese War

4. The Peloponnesian War

5. The Mongol conquests

6. The English Civil War

7. The hundred Years' War

8. The thirty Years' War

9 The Opium Wars
Men of War: Vietnam.

Would the Civ 3: Conquests scenarios fit within any of your criteria? Might also have some additional stuff for you to look at.

And it also happens to be the best 4X game ever made, though the Conquests scenarios aren't as much about 4X as they are about diplomacy and warfare. All of this rests on fantastic, solid game mechanics. You can get the game for next to nothing from Steam.

Damn you GOG, when? WHEN???
Age of Empires 2, there's a story mode that covers the 100 years war, specifically following Joan of Ark. It also covers some other events and wars such as the revolt of Scotland against the British Invasion (Sir William Wallace, the tutorial levels of the game), and there's probably some others. It may even have some of the Mongolian conquest, I don't remember it all.

World War 1 I can't help with. World War 2 is recreated small scale in Rise of Nations, you could possibly make a custom map to cover the first world war as well.
Have you considered AGEOD games, like World War One? They covered many other periods as well (Pride of Nations and its DLCs, Napoleon's Campaigns, Rise of Prussia), but these don't seem to cover the wars you're looking for (though the DLCs for PoN do include some wars that are rarely covered).

Whether these games are fun depends highly on your preference. They are slow, complex, turn-based games with lots of historical detail. They play very similar to boardgames, some are actually based on those.
I wish we could get more historical preenactment games. I've been waiting for Humans vs Gorillas War for a while, that culminates in humans escaping to the moon.

I have not played Pride of Nations but I have most of the AGEOD games. Most of them are pretty good. But World War One (the gold edition included) was not very good in my opinion. It had a lot of good ideas but poor execution
0 A.D.
I would like to see a Prehistory: Total War game, with heavy Dinoriders influences.

The Civ scenarios from 3 and 4 are awesome. But I am looking for games that were built around specific conflicts or time periods.
If you happen to find anything covering some different time periods, Zookie, for God's sake let us know!

I totally agree with you about the over-saturation of certain periods, and of certain battles during those periods. Do we really need another Battle of the Bulge game? Why MORe Stalingrad...gimme some Kharkov!

the sad thing is that in the realm of board games, a LOT of different time periods and conflicts are being covered. Asymmetric warfare in Angola, British vs. Zulus in 19th Century Africa, War of 1812, Rome vs. Carthage, French and British fighting in Canada, Unification of Japan, etc. Where is that level of creativity and breadth in computer war gaming?

Check out www.matrixgames.com/

It is a company that specializes in disrupting strategy war games. There is a lot of the same old same old in there. But they do have a wider selection than most.

A for your list; Birth of America 2 has the French and Indian War in it. Shogun 2 is a great game about the Shogun period of Japan and there is a British Vs Zulu that I played about ten years ago. I see if I can dig it up.

Oh, I'm already down with Matrix. :) And BoA 2 is a terrific game. I have Shogun 2, I just haven't played it yet.
On the Peloponesian war :

- Hegemony gold (Longbow games). Once you realize that the concept ( more or less based on the principle of a tower defense ) actually fits well how warfarewas conducted in the 5th-4th century BC

- the peloponesian wars mod for Age of mythology : titans

On the war of hundred years

- Montjoie (Paradox)

On the Boxer revolt

- Age of Rifles ? Can't think of anything else

Rorke's Drift is British vs Zulu.
