Eador. Masters of the Broken World, Etherlords 1&2, Blitzkrieg Anthology 1&2, and more 50% off!

If USSR still existed we're pretty sure its economy could largely depend on game development. There are so many talented people in Russia and former Soviet republics, dedicated to creating complex and solid games, that if the Soviet Union still existed this part of industry could become huge--if only the communists in charge were actually interested in economic development. Let's play a little make believe: imagine a Soviet Empire built on the foundation of gamedev studios, producing top-quality strategy games. If it was preparing to take over the world, the first step would surely be a [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/soviet_strategy_strike_260713]Soviet Strategy Strike. Today, we offer you a taste of the imaginary Soviet Strategic Total Warfare, with a 50% discount!

Eador. Masters of the Broken World is one of the biggest, toughest, and most extensive turn-based strategy games in history. It takes all the complexity you would expect from a 4X game (that is: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate), adds some extra challenge, extends the gameworld beyond measure, and finishes off the mixture with some top-notch dreamy graphics. The game faced some issues upon its release, but ever since, the developers worked towards squishing all the bugs and implementing even more features. This is the first time you can get the game 50% off on GOG.com. At $9.99 this game quite probably the best value for your money, when it comes to hardcore turn-based strategic gameplay!

If fantasy isn't your thing, you can still get your share of turn-based goodness mixed with real-time gameplay in a captivating Sci-Fi setting. In Altar Interactive's UFO series you'll be commanding a squad of special force operatives facing alien menace in tactical combat. Drawing inspiration from Microprose original X-Com games, those titles deliver their very own variety of terrifying extra terrestrial threat. Witness the entire interplanetary conflict from the first days of the invasion to the final strike against the aliens in three gripping iterations. You can get UFO: Aftermath for only $2.99, while UFO: Aftershock, and the concluding UFO: Afterlight are available for only $3.99 each. Don't miss your chance to defend the Earth!

That's but a small sample of what game the full Soviet Strategy Strike delivers 50% off. Direct yourself to the promo page, for the full varied and robust offer! The promo lasts until Tuesday, July 30, at 3:59AM GMT. Don't miss out!
For those looking at UFO games, don't dismiss them out of hand because they aren't Xcom; They play like the 3rd Xcom game. But if you paused them enough, it was kinda/sorta turn based. Enough that I could play it, anyway.
Also, don't forget the Mods!

UFO Aftermath has Combo Mod v3.03 beta I finished that after about 3 months. Just don't do like I did and put the computer in your backpack instead of your hands (Major game breaking bug otherwise) It's getting hard to find, so download soon.

UFO Aftershock has Okim's UFO ACM Mod("Artwork" Conversion Mod)
Note: He really fixed a lot more than artwork, such as adding weapons with new sounds, damage balance, enemy spawn numbers, and enemy spawning loadouts (to use those new weapons). I played over 180 games, and each mission took at least an hour (counting the geoscape time to get there), so it took me about one and a half years to finish it.

I haven't played UFO Afterlight, so I cannot comment about the mods. Any suggestions?

deonast: Out of interest to those who have bought it, in the artworks zip there is a picture titled Rogue.jpg what do you make of that, is that his arm or something else?
It certainly looks... weird. I think he is supposed to carry the fairy under his arm. The way it is drawn, however, makes it look like the fairy is growing out of the rogue's shoulder.

I was thinking it might have been a drawn mistake, though how someone with obvious talent managed to do that I have no idea.
Has anyone played Fantasy Wars? I have a lot of fantasy-themed TBSs already (Eador, Age of Wonders, King's Bounty) would this one have anything unique or worthwhile?
Just finished buying and downloading Blitzkrieg and it's even better than the demo which blew me away. It begs the question, why are we in here instead of playing this game!? :D

It has a tutorial which I thought I might have to begrudgingly do without AND it has a difficulty setting in case I'm not feeling 100%. AND when I run over something in my tank I get yelled at for "scratching the armor". THAT IS SO COOL!!!!

Bloodygoodgames: Cossacks, I'd say :)

It's known as one of the best RTS games ever made. It can be difficult but, as you get 3 games with a total of over 200 missions, it's literally months of gameplay -- for 3 bucks. Well worth it, I'd say. (And yes, I'm buying it myself before the end of the sale -- although I doubt I'll have time to play it until next year :)

EDIT:

Oh yes, and I've played a few missions in the first Cossacks game ages ago. Awesome awesome game and gorgeous graphics in all 3 games, especially for their age.
thanks i'll do some more research on it

Is it a remake of Fantasy General, which is like Panzer General, so if you like Hex Strategy you will love Fantasy Wars, I did. This is how remakes should be done.

Nesoo: This is pretty much where I'm sitting. I wishlisted it as soon as it was announced, but the reviews say that it's basically a graphical update of Genesis, which I already have (though I haven't played it yet).
I've been waiting for the major bugfixes to be done before installing/playing it, but FWIK it has a few small improvements/additions over Genesis: shards can have special properties, there's a desert terrain type, and the campaign unfolds much more quickly (so multiple playthroughs are a lot more feasible). I believe it has better difficulty scaling at the low end too (so Beginner is actually around that instead of being what most games would consider Expert).

The soundtrack seems to be a bit better quality too.

I really enjoy Panzer General 2 so this sounds like it's right up my alley, thanks!

I'll probably pick up Etherlords too, HOMM + MTG sounds like a winning combo.

Nice, I was curious about Fantasy General as well. Might grab that along with one of the UFO titles.

And I can certainly recommend Etherlords. Besides the fun factor, the graphics are nice, and the music is very good. So good I sometimes play it outside the game.
Was the overheating issue with the King's Bounty games described here ever fixed? I'd like to grab and play those games, but i'm not putting my PC at risk of overheating to do it.

Well a while back I played King's Bounty - The Legend, haven't finished it but played for a few days and didn't notice any overheating. In that forum I see mention of NVIDIA and I was probably on the same ATI card I have at the moment.
I have Star Wolves, Silent Storm, Eador: Genesis, and Cossacks Anthology in my basket. Trying to decide if there's any other essential titles I'm overlooking.

Hmmm, I guess I could keep an eye on the temps with HWMonitor while doing a test run. If it has the same problem, i'm only out $5.
What about Crossworlds/Armored Princess? Any known overheating issues with it?

I have them but haven't tried them yet, haven't had the time. Maybe someone else out there can answer that one.
