Having recently bought Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 on eBay for a song, I'm in the mood to play some old school 2.5D goodness again. I am, however, very, very weary of the Doom 1 and 2 IWADs already. Are there any interesting mods out there that can offer a refreshing experience into what must be almost 400 hours clocked in total for both the games and their relevant TCs/mods? Say, random level generators, or interesting survival-based modes like Skulltag's? Maybe even something really unorthodox, like Ghoul's Forest?

Also, in b4 bird is the word.

Cold as Hell? http://www.doomwadstation.com/cah/
DOOM64? I can't find the link but it requires the original DOOM wads...
Aeons of death.

Randomized monsters and weapons from various games, I don't know how many of them are here but certainly a ton and some more.
I stick to old school vanilla megawads mostly. Off the top of my head...

Alien Vendetta: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Alien_Vendetta
Scythe: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Scythe
Scythe II: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Scythe_2
Eternal DOOM: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Eternal_Doom
Hell Revealed: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Hell_Revealed
Hell Revealed II: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Hell_Revealed_II
Icarus: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Icarus:_Alien_Vanguard
Memento Mori: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Memento_Mori
Memento Mori II: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Memento_Mori_II
Plutonia 2: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Plutonia_2

Bonus points if you play these in DosBox/Chocolate DOOM :)
You will undoubtedly know the Doomworld idgames database is an excellent resource for all kinds of stuff. Other recommended source ports are /ZDoom and PrBoom+.

Also for D64, grab the Kex Engine e.g. D64 EX from Kaiser's to play D64 on PC. It's more authentic than the Absolution TC was (which used a modified version of Doomsday and required a Doom II IWAD to play).

I'd suggest Brutal Doom. Adds more blood, brutallity and a bit of fun to the game. I think 1.2 is the latest. :) Also, Fatalities! And Head Shots! :D :D :D

Yeah, because what Doom needed most was more violence ;-P

(Don't tell anybody, but I'm actually checking them out, been to long since I had a good Doom)
Wooo some of them like Aeons look really sweet. I'll have to check them out this weekend.

Besides Skulltag and zDoom, are there any other ports still being updated periodically?

Cold as Hell showed, that Doom needed reloading and bleeding that can only be stopped by bandages. :)

Personally, I find that GZDoom offers more than ZDoom does in terms of pushing the engine.

Thanks. Anything external files I should take note of to download for gzDoom? Haven't followed up on gz/zDoom's updates at all. Would be nice if there are features like MD3 models, which was supposed to be in jDoom, until all progress on jDoom halted overnight.

For GZDoom, just treat it as an advanced ZDoom as you all will need to use the source port is the IWAD(s) in the same directory as the source port and then to simply run the PWAD you wish to play.

Anybody give this a try? http://doom3.filefront.com/file/;42750
Project MSX works way better than I expected. Modern FPS things with doom gameplay? What.
