It worked in the prior Warcraft games, because you weren't staring at the backside of one character for hours on end. When you're up-close and personal with WoW's graphics, it's hard to take the game seriously, especially in the modern era of neigh-photorealistic worlds for MMOs.
Also, Warcraft has -not- had the same art style for all of their games. There was a Warcraft Adventure game, I forget exactly what it was called, followed the story of a young Orc, very short lived game. It's style was still cartoony, but it was more like.. Dragon's Lair in graphics.
