Daggerfall Unity makes Daggerfall rather playable. Unfortunately, GOG is (as usual) using misrepresenting screenshots, making the game look far worse than it does. (Those are from the fugly as chuck D.R.E.A.M. mod, a several gigabyte mod that's 100s of times larger than the game.)
Now, with that disclaimer aside, let's actually talk about the game. Daggerfall is big. Not an abstracted big where they pretend the world is large and then have you go across the world in ways that trivialized the distance, actual big.
With that sheer size came several bugs. Unity fixes most of the ones that would be showstoppers for most sensibilities, along with a plethora of improvements which help make it much less clumsy to play. Instead of having to specifically swing your sword across the screen to "simulate" combat, you can just hold the attack button.
Daggerfall Unity doesn't polish off all the rough edges of Daggerfall, but it makes it far, *far* more playable than it ever had been. I can only hope for a similar project for The Arena era of Tamriel. It'll sure beat the pants off whatever ES6 has cooking.
