Just posted my 2 cents in the discord channel.
I don't think it's a coincidence that, like EA, their GOG catalog mostly ends where they started using online DRM. These companies just don't want to pay people to remove it.

I have also noticed a pattern but there are a still a bunch of pre-Origin/Uplay( or whatever they are called now) titles that are not on GOG (Battlefield (Refractor era), Sims (up to 3), Silent Hunter (1 and 3), Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory.. you get the point). I hope to see those here eventually. Cheers

It would be nice if companies like Ubisoft would focus more on getting each game in a nice offline complete package bundle, that wouldn't need a sunset, if they release it here among other places.

This overreliance on Always-Online, Online services and microtransaction shops will always lead to something needing to shut down, because it is unsustainable. Promises of keeping servers up for many years was a lie yesterday and it will be tomorrow too.

Tying the client in is one of those ugly unnecessary death sentences that are easily avoidable.

I have no idea what convincing arguments will end up being listened too. I just hope it will happen some time.

Corporations don't care about ethics. The only 'argument' they would ever listen to is a financial one - if gamers reject the DRM and stop buying their products. Until that happens, they will continue to put the DRM in there.

Well, the games that use the Ubisoft Club of course won't make it here.
But games like PoP forgotten sands, that was playable without online DRM when it was released on DVD, could still make it here.

Oh, I am fully aware that the only argument involves money and barely nothing else. However, I am hoping for a realization on long-term earnings being strong rather than the short-term lie of infinite money from microtransactions and constant player engagement that will wane quick.

Yeah, that is a pretty obvious pattern. If GOG are still anything like their older selves, they should offer to unbundle Ubisoft Connect for Ubisoft. Same with EA.

Wait, what region does PoP Forgotten not use UbiSoft Connect/Uplay?

PoP Forgotten Sands requires UbiSoft Connect (fka Uplay) everywhere. Even on Steam, it required UPlay; speaking from experience.

PC Gaming Wiki on PoP FS shows every version uses Uplay/UbiSoft Connect for PC https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Prince_of_Persia:_The_Forgotten_Sands

Hehe, "even on Steam" :) There was a world before Steam.

I own the DVD version from 2010. I only instralled Uplay for AC Origins 8 years later, then I also registered this game to see what bonus it would unlock. But until then I played offline, Uplay was completely optional.

edit: And btw, Steam now says "online features are no longer available". It's more DRM free than ever (except for the DVD version).

I wouldn't mind more Ubisoft games here but they'd rather die than give us more DRM-free games. If they were going to add more, it would have been done by now.

When's the last time you actually installed your DVD version? I think you may be misremembering. I have bought every single Assassin's Creed game from 1 all the way to 3 physically and other than the original, which predated uPlay,, they all required uPlay. AC2 was released in 2009.
uPlay didn't start as a Steam clone though. It started as a separate launcher for each game, which featured online authentication, patching, 4 challenges and 4 rewards. That may be why you think it didn't use uPlay. Eventually they unified all those stand-alone launchers into a single one and added a digital store, more challenges and more rewards. I am 98% certain that if you installed your DVD version today, the launcher would update itself to Ubisoft Connect.

The Forgotten Sands Steam version still requires uPlay / Ubisoft Connect.

I only installed it once. It has been on my hard drive since. Yes, there was a online component, but it was optional.
Go to one, see 5 LOL. That made me laugh too hard.
Reminds me of the Windows XP days.
As much as that is bad, still... discord!
Why is everything going to discord

Edit: Sorry a offtopic question, Strange, I tried to reply to neumi in a quote but somehow gog forum removes the quotes coding before publishing my post even after I tried editing the quote back in after posting...

why is that? weird bug

Not sure what you mean by that.

There is something weird happening with the forums. I sometimes cannot post replies as they just keep loading forever, but I can reply to others. It won't let me reply to neumi5694 now lol. Well anyway, perhaps it's for the better.
