We make adjectives from basic nouns male and female (meska and zenska). Female and male (polish: samiec and samica) are used only towards animals.

In English you use the same adjective for sex both for people and animals, we use a different one. Strange language differences :P

This is the problem with major games. I ran a guild in WoW for a while, and two reasons destroyed my ability to lead it, causing me to go my separate way.

1) Loot whoring. We ran raids and we played by the rules, this caused much animosity and accusation, and anger that was still prevalent the last time I had a character on that server AND

2) The romeos and juliets carrying on, sometimes one romeo would flirt with 3 different juliets on the same raid. I had officers (male) that would get pissed if their girlfriends didn't get to come along.

True story. These days when someone tells me they're female ingame I politely say "ok cool" and keep doing my thing.

The drama that comes with males who are socially challenged and the females that crave their attention can decimate guilds, friendships, and the whole pulse of entire servers. Skye, I am truly grateful you are not one of those types.

Thanks for giving me an outlet for a real issue in modern guild-based games. As a result of that particular WoW guild I no longer lead raids and have a very modest guild in GW2.

Actually, under-reporting many also have another reason. It has been suggested that females get more immersed in the games as males, that they have a higher ability to suspend reality. Therefore there may be under-reporting because of not realising how much time has actually passed playing.

My best friend is a girl, pretty redhead. She is an awesome gamer too, when she does game. I told her I had a crush on her (truth be told my legs felt weak from the moment we met)...that did not end well. Shot my self esteem into the toilet for 3 points...and flushed for a bonus point. LOL T.T

Exactly! It's the same in Polish language. Male and female are more "animal-ish" or "primate" than simply saying Man and Woman. I think it's because of language differences.
In english there's no distinguish in sex name between people and animals. Most languages have them, though. At least the difference between calling somebody a woman or a female is much stronger in languages other than English.

I was lucky enough to spend much of my time in a WoW guild that was relatively free from this. I saw plenty of examples what you describe however, and it has led me to be rather suspicious as to the motivations of the types of players that seem to want to emphasize the fact that they are female at every possible occasion.

I played with many female players who were not like this at all, and I think the over the top attention seeking types are likely the minority. It's unfortunate, though, that those few who do seek to use their gender to gain attention or advantage tend to give a bad name to female players in such games in general.

Yeah I was in no way implying most women are like this, just that I had a powder keg that exploded and had the fuse lit from the get go. Most women I've gamed with outside of that particular WoW server have been classy and only let me know they were female after we'd gamed together for a while.

The classy ones don't want the attention, and it's not all from boys whose faces are covered in zits. I've seen men in their 30's do strange shit just for a little cyber action.

As long as there's gender (even as "a social group of self-identified members, membership in which strongly correlates with the XX chromosomal combination and vice versa"), there have to be words for it. And referring to girls as women is kind of creepy, at least now. (I initially wrote "women" in my above post about the clan meetup, then changed to "female"; a good third of them were teenagers.)

In Polish calling you male or female is equal to compare you to animals.
It's not depressing. It's LANGUAGE. Same difference as "body" or "carcass". In some languages some words are limited to animals only.

Perhaps it's a language/culture thing. There are probably things you'd find offensive or weird while I wouldn't even notice 'em. To me, calling a person male or female is either belittling their humanity, or sounds like what I'd imagine saying "look at my buff muscles, bro, I'm hot stuff" seriously sounds to you (this when they're used as positive words).
