Psyringe: The more I read this thread, the more I feel reminded to jokes about women buying tons of shoes they'll never use. Are video games _our_ shoes? It seems that the two sexes aren't all that different after all. ;)
The worst thing is... we mock them for it. "What, another pair of SHOES!? How many do you have on your closet, woman? You have nothing to wear? Oh puh-leeeeze...."

They're probably talking about this when they go together to the bathroom. Our games have become their weapon to shut us up. :)
Another advice for resisting: I've found that a lot of it also comes down to curiosity. I'm often content playing around with a game for a while and don't always mean to finish it. Try tracking down demos of the games you think of buying and play them before you spend any money. If you don't find the time to do that or are not even patient enough to play through the demos, chances are you won't play the real thing either. Maybe a short demo play is enough to satisfy your curiosity, or you realize the game isn't even all that good.
Well, I just signed up for Backloggery... and entered all my games from here and Steam. :Frown face: That said, I'm going to have to get more games here before this sale is up, which means about 20 more games to the BL.

It's times like these I'm glad I just have a laptop with integrated graphics--the backlog would be a hell of a lot longer if I could play modern games. Here's what I have so far:

Put a mouse trap on your credit card, that way each time you go to reach for it to buy games you are punished physically for doing so.

I have a budget paper thing with bars on my wall. The left end represents nothing spent, the right end means my monthly fun budget spent, and when I buy something for fun, I color the bar according to the amount spent and write what I bought/did on colored area (an example attached). On top of that, I printed and put this comic next to the budget paper. They've worked surprisingly well.

If I'd known GOG's Christmas sale was going to be this generous I think I would have begged off from buying anything this year (hell, maybe the year before that too), considering most of what I bought were digital "re-buys" of games I bought on physical media years ago (CD & DVD-discs). I'm seeing many games I plunked down for that I thought would *never* go on sale. I'm feeling a bit peeved about buying Stronghold: Crusader on Dotemu a month ago, just before it went on sale no less than *three* times here on GOG!

So, in goes SMAC, even if it is the neutered version. It is the best-designed game of all-time, in my opinion, and my favorite strategy entrant.

In goes Wing Commander 1/2/3, to assuage my guilt of playing the superior (and exorbitantly priced out-of-print) Kilrathi Saga version. Actually the extra goodies of GOG's WC3 I think are very much worth the entry fee.

In goes Blood, because, well... I guess I enjoyed wasting time on the shareware version of it back in 1997 as a teenager. I'm not a FPS player very often, but playing Blood basically taught me how to play and survive those games, nothing difficulty-wise that was made after it has come close really.

There more titles I guess I could buy...always been curious about Caesar 3, but....meh. Besides, I have a fortnight to change my mind about any more "impulse" buys. Good job, GOG. An apt sale for belt-tightening times.
Score another one for Backloggery.

I signed up a couple of months ago, and aside for the fact that updating the site is kind of entertaining in itself, it really helps a bit resisting those "can't miss it!" sales all around.

For example, every time I see some sweet RPG sale, it brutally reminds me that i have yet to finish huge titles like Mass Effect, or Dragon Age and Drakensang that I've not even started, so i regain my composure.

... granted, that didn't stop me to buy Avadon last week, but it was only 4 bucks, so sue me! ;-)
