Aver: They banned it not because drugs, but because:

"The game includes a weapon referred to by the Applicant as an 'Alien Anal Probe'. The Applicant states that this weapon can be 'shoved into enemy's backsides'. The lower half of the weapon resembles a sword hilt and the upper part contains prong-like appendages which circle around what appears to be a large dildo which runs down the centre of the weapon.
"When using this weapon the player approaches a (clothed) victim from behind and thrusts the weapon between the victim's legs and then lifts them off the ground before pulling a trigger which launches the victim into the air. After the probe has been implicitly inserted into the victim's anus the area around their buttocks becomes pixelated highlighting that the aim of the weapon is to penetrate the victim's anus.
"The weapon can be used during gameplay on enemy characters or civilians. In the Board's opinion, a weapon designed to penetrate the anus of enemy characters and civilians constitutes a visual depiction of implied sexual violence that is interactive and not justified by context and as such the game should be Refused Classification."

It is official statement. :D
From the board's pdf:
"In addition, the game includes elements of illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards. Such depictions are prohibited by the computer games guidelines."

But even the dildo killing is a stupid decision as well. Why is it OK to massacre an entire neighbourhood with an arsenal of weapons, but not OK when said weapon is also a sex toy?

Not saying the weapon is my cup of tea or that I'm into drugs but seems stupid that after getting our 18+ rating system finally we still have banned games like this. Guess we now need an X rating for over 18's ???

Yep, it's pathetic. One thing is for sure; as soon as I play SR IV I'm going to take drugs and go on a dildo killing spree because I can't distinguish fantasy from reality.

"fantasy"? "Reality"? What do those words mean? Can I eat you?

mrking58: Erm I don't like sites like piratebay. They make it too easy to steal stuff and it does destroy industries.
Not remotely true.

Movie industry and music industry one of the wealthiest industries in the world, with some of the richest 'employees' that have ever lived in the history of the planet (actors, movie producers and directors, singers, bands etc).

Video game industry -- not that far behind and catching up fast.

keeveek: I also treat torrents as my "local" copies of the games and a gaming museum.
Especially with a bit older (and obscure) PC CD games, as far as I can tell the problem with "torrent museum" is quite often:

1. 0 sources
2. A CD rip which is missing e.g. music and/or FMV.
3. Even if you find a full CD set for a game, finding a suitable update patch, and a crack which works with that update, can pose a problem.
4. If the game had any expansions, finding them (and getting them work with the base game) can be also problematic.

Hence, I personally much prefer e.g. my original physical CDs to torrent versions. If there were any updates released for the original games, they can usually be obtained from www.patches-scrolls.de.

Playing the torrent version quite often means playing either an inferior CD rip, or at least the initial buggy 1.0 version of the game. I'd rather not.

At this point a fully up-to-date GOG version including all the (relevant) expansion packs is the ultimate version for me, of course. I used to keep a 24 CD bag of my favorite PC CD games with me to play on my laptop, but now I see much less reason for that.

Gimme a GOG version of Heretic 2 and I'll make you a prince.

I use torrents only for games I can't buy and also I think of torrents as an alternate source of the games I bought if GOG or steam blows up.

It's not ideal, but storing things on your HDD isn't ideal either.
I only buy out of print music now. So I wouldn't feel bad if I had to sell it since the item is out of print. Big Country for example will not make anymore profit from their out of print rarities I-VII CDs since they are now out of print.

I will definitely rip these and back them up as highest quality WAV files as the set is now a historical artifact rather than just another music release. Ditto for the early FIXX albums with their various tracklist differences. Ditto for the Alarm. Ditto for early JAMES.

keeveek: Yeah, like movie industry, music industry, gaming industry, all fucking ruined.

mrking58: Erm have you seen the music industry lately? It is very stale
Mainstream wise yes but its been going progressively to shit for about 10 years now and piracy is not the reason for that.

There are people out there that pay for things to support the content creator even if they don't have to.

Encode those WAV files to FLAC, lossless so you will save some space over WAV and there are a good array of hifi systems and components that will play FLAC natively.

This. The torrents of many older and obscure games in my collection are simply dead or nowhere to be found and even the ones that are available are often ripped. This "oh, I can just throw my stuff away, someone else is keeping the stuff online" philosophy is utter crap because most people on the internet seem to have it and the few ones who feel obliged to keep a game alive and available are morons. Just recently I tried getting a copy of Atomic Bomberman online because my physical copy is burried somewhere in my parents' attic - took me ages to find the full version with all animations, music and audio online. And even the people commenting on and seeding the ripped versions don't seem to notice or care that it's an awful version they are playing and spreading.
