PimPamPet: I think we can all agree it's down to personal preference, and they were both incredibly gifted.

CaptainGyro: I think we all should agree that this thread is more like Queen versus Michael Jackson...because that's really what is going on.
Either way, as many previous post have stated, it is a pretty silly comparison. I'll need to have a chat with the OP because, while I'm having fun with the thread, I can't get over how someone can just out of the blue think of these two of all things to compare. It's like sitting there and all of a sudden thinking: What's the better movie, "Lady and the Tramp" or "Full Metal Jacket"?

tinyE: While I totally agree I think it would be fair to say that Queen WAS Freddie and Freddie WAS Queen.
With all due respect, sir, that is a pile of bovine manure. No, it would not be fair to say that. I do, however, agree with the rest of the post.

I don't think that's fair at all and it's insulting of the other members of Queen. Like I've said a few times now, Freddie Mercury only wrote about half of the Queen songs, and he didn't write all of their best known songs
While I fail to see how that is insulting anyone I meant no disrespect and I apologize for the post if it upset everyone so much. I will go so far as to remove that part of the post.

EDIT.
There, happy? You can put down your torches now, I come in peace. :D

It's not about how many songs he wrote. It's more about him being the engine that made Queen tick for so many years and about what Queen cannot be without him. Besides, most of the songs in their final versions are a result of group's members cooperative effort.

cogadh: Amazing album. Great movie, too (Highlander).

Piranjade: Yesss...
Although I will have to get the soundtrack one day as "A Kind of Magic" doesn't have some songs from the movie like "Hammer to fall", "New York, New York" and maybe some others.
Unfortunately, there is no actual soundtrack album, "A Kind of Magic" is the closest thing to it. Like AzureKite mentioned, "Hammer to Fall" is on "The Works" and "New York, New York" was never actually released on any albums or singles.
Neither.

I think I can actually remember at least some of the lyrics of about five songs from each artist, which means neither of them is a particular favorite of mine. As far as legacy/impact on subsequent artists, well, they're both pretty influential, but if you come right down to it, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, and the Beatles blow them both out of the water. If you want the Holy Trinity of 20th century rock/pop influences, those three are it.

Elmofongo: ....Sigh this is a hard one to make I take it, both are so different yet so similar at the same time for me so who do you think is better, Michael Jackson or Freddie Mercury?
Freddy Mercury by a landslide, Michael has tremedous talent, but I never was into pop music.

Brian May has often said that it was Freddie who was the focal point - he brought people together, got them motivated. He had the energy, the drive, the passion and if Freddie hadn't joined with the others to make Queen, they'd probably have went separate ways long before.

John Deacon felt the same way - with Freddie gone, he gave up life in show business completely. Freddie was the one pushing Deacon to write songs - Deacon was very shy and humble and always felt his songs were no good yet look at the hits he wrote:

You're My Best Friend
I Want To Break Free
Spread Your Wings
Another One Bites The Dust

And he wrote or cowrote several other favorite songs of mine which aren't well known (One Year Of Love being quite brilliant). The point is that Freddie pulled him out of his shell and the other band members have similar stories - Freddie motivated them. Now look at the music they made since Freddie died: Brian May made an album composed of songs which he worked on when Freddie was still alive, quite a few of them being songs that failed to make it onto Queen albums. Brian May is easily the best but even he lost inspiration after his Back To The Light album and the Cosmos Rocks CD was very very mediocre.
Freddie Mercury at his peak:

Freddie all the way.

Incidentally, I actually went to the same school as Brian May's son (same school as Brian attended as a child). Brian was a school governor, used to see him occasionally at school functions...
Between those two I prefer Prince.
