First Person Shooters are a dime a dozen. Zombies might be the most overused motif in video games--and pop-culture in general. Yet somehow the zombie apocalypse mod of the über-realistic military FPS turned out as fresh as the morning dew. That is if the dew was actually blood pouring from some unfortunate soul's artery ripped open by the brain-hungry undead. Ladies and gentlemen, here's Day-Z!

The key feature of DayZ is it's realism. Yeah--that's right--realism. Because zombie apocalypse is a very real threat, and there's a lot of people taking it--pardon the pun--dead serious. Movies like Zombieland, 28 Days Later, and shows like The Walking Dead might be just entertainment for you, but for some they're far more than just that. They're survival tutorials, preparing the farsighted few for the sudden, but inevitable undead outbreak. You'd be better off joining their ranks, so learn your zombie-lore and test your survival skill in the safe test-environment that is DayZ. You can be sure, that what you'll experience in the game is a 1:1 representation of a real-life zombie pandemic. That's right--you don't play DayZ just for fun. You play it to prepare.

Even though DayZ is still in the alpha stage of development, it gathered a community of way over a million players and has received nothing but high praise from the press. Eurogamer and Kotaku called it "probably the best zombie game ever", Wired speculated that it will be the most terrifying game of 2012, and Bit-Tech comparing its impact on gaming to that made by the most influential mods: Counter Strike and DotA. DayZ offers a huge feature-rich gameworld for an immersive experience, massive multiplayer that will have you work with or compete against dozens of other players, a complex medical system featuring realistic injuries and ways to treat them, hunting and scavenging for food and other scarce supplies, and--duh!--hordes of zombies hungry for your braaaainz.

The current version of DayZ supports easy installation and simple startup interface, that will let you easily find and join a server. Once you have Arma 2: Combined Operations all you need to do is download the installer file from the mod's official site, run it... And you're ready to go. Or rather: go, go, GO! Just remember about cardio!

Both Arma 2 and the Operation Arrowhead expansion, that are required to run DayZ, are now available on GOG.com as Arma 2: Combined Operations, and until Tuesday, August 28 at 10:59 AM GMT you can get them for the reduced price of $23.99. Hurry up, don't let other survivors get a head start!

The sad thing is that I had played similar mods for the original Operation Flashpoint almost a decade ago and none of them rose to big popularity. And the popularity of DayZ is rather a negative statement about the industry's current situation than anything else.

Also be warned that this damn mod might be the reason why we will have to live through another wave of zombie games that may last for a couple of years. It won't take long before some big publisher will announce his own version of a "realistic and tough zombie apocalypse simulator".

did you miss The War Z?

i like these mod spotlights GOG occasionally does, but i dislike how it's all about Day Z with ArmA 2 nowadays. it degrades a terific military simulation to being merely the vehicle for yet another zombie game.
low rated
Insane fail GOG.... I never thought for a minute I would see this travesty on here. DayZ is terrible. Just another boring zombie game that's main focus isnt even about shooting zombies. yeah... fun....

I obviously did. Anyway - that's exactly what I'm talking about.

Btw, I just lolled my ass off when reading this on their website:
"Well, we're not really developing from scratch. The design and idea for The War Z has been in place for a couple of years - we only just started developing the specific features for the game in the past year."

Pathetic liars.

I'll wait for the free standalone version to try this, maybe...

phayon959: Insane fail GOG....
Well, they DID have to mention it considering the whole hype. It would rather be a fail not to feature it here.

The hype is the worst part of it lol. but I understand what you mean. and I suppose you're right.
I'm kinda disappointed most of the sales from the game is because of a third party mod. Not because of the hard work that Bohemia put to make this game one of finest military simulator out there. I know plenty people out there who won't even touch the base game, they go straight to Day-Z. More money for the developer, but i feel the game itself is not appreciated enough. Let see how ArmA III fare soon with Day-Z as a stand alone game.

Jeez why all those zombies are so popular? I enjoy postapo worlds in games but in my book those realistic 'cold war' worlds are better.

I still have to play through Arma 1. I've not played much of it, but it seems similar to Operation flashpoint, which is great.

I don't understand the need for fantasy in every game. Some realism makes a change in something like Arma.

I'd say because it is one of the "safe" hate groups, noone is going to get angry if you start shooting at zombies, while shooting at {insert group here} means that some people will complain that the game is racist/sexist/speciest or in any other way prejudiced.
