First Person Shooters are a dime a dozen. Zombies might be the most overused motif in video games--and pop-culture in general. Yet somehow the zombie apocalypse mod of the über-realistic military FPS turned out as fresh as the morning dew. That is if the dew was actually blood pouring from some unfortunate soul's artery ripped open by the brain-hungry undead. Ladies and gentlemen, here's Day-Z!

The key feature of DayZ is it's realism. Yeah--that's right--realism. Because zombie apocalypse is a very real threat, and there's a lot of people taking it--pardon the pun--dead serious. Movies like Zombieland, 28 Days Later, and shows like The Walking Dead might be just entertainment for you, but for some they're far more than just that. They're survival tutorials, preparing the farsighted few for the sudden, but inevitable undead outbreak. You'd be better off joining their ranks, so learn your zombie-lore and test your survival skill in the safe test-environment that is DayZ. You can be sure, that what you'll experience in the game is a 1:1 representation of a real-life zombie pandemic. That's right--you don't play DayZ just for fun. You play it to prepare.

Even though DayZ is still in the alpha stage of development, it gathered a community of way over a million players and has received nothing but high praise from the press. Eurogamer and Kotaku called it "probably the best zombie game ever", Wired speculated that it will be the most terrifying game of 2012, and Bit-Tech comparing its impact on gaming to that made by the most influential mods: Counter Strike and DotA. DayZ offers a huge feature-rich gameworld for an immersive experience, massive multiplayer that will have you work with or compete against dozens of other players, a complex medical system featuring realistic injuries and ways to treat them, hunting and scavenging for food and other scarce supplies, and--duh!--hordes of zombies hungry for your braaaainz.

The current version of DayZ supports easy installation and simple startup interface, that will let you easily find and join a server. Once you have Arma 2: Combined Operations all you need to do is download the installer file from the mod's official site, run it... And you're ready to go. Or rather: go, go, GO! Just remember about cardio!

Both Arma 2 and the Operation Arrowhead expansion, that are required to run DayZ, are now available on GOG.com as Arma 2: Combined Operations, and until Tuesday, August 28 at 10:59 AM GMT you can get them for the reduced price of $23.99. Hurry up, don't let other survivors get a head start!

JMich: I'd say because it is one of the "safe" hate groups, noone is going to get angry if you start shooting at zombies, while shooting at {insert group here} means that some people will complain that the game is racist/sexist/speciest or in any other way prejudiced.
Didn't people get their panties in a twist when the protagonist was shooting black zombies in Africa? RE4, I think?

Anyway:
"there's a lot of people taking it--pardon the pun--dead serious."
That needs an adverb and not an adjective, so it's "seriously."
Does GOG have Americans writing newsposts or something? For some reason Americans in general seem to passionately loathe adverbs.

coldtony: Worth mentioning that it's going to be a standalone game, so possibly not a good idea to buy the Arma 2 pack JUST for the DayZ mod?
Yeah but fuck knows when that's going to be out. Not this year.
I think I recall them mentioning that the mod will be updated side by side with the standalone?

Someone nuke them and destroy forever.

R0T0R: Free standalone? From where you got that information? o.O

JMich: DayZ site
I'm probably blind but I don't see anything about free standalone. Also I recently read an interview with Rocket and he said he's going to follow Minecraft model (alpha with huge discount)?

It's not you who is blind, but me. I seem to be unable to read the f-word and parse it succesfully, thus I linked to you the post where the standalone is announced.

Interview with Bohemia Interactive about PC platform, DayZ, ARMA III and more.

wormholewizards: I'm kinda disappointed most of the sales from the game is because of a third party mod. Not because of the hard work that Bohemia put to make this game one of finest military simulator out there. I know plenty people out there who won't even touch the base game, they go straight to Day-Z. More money for the developer, but i feel the game itself is not appreciated enough. Let see how ArmA III fare soon with Day-Z as a stand alone game.
There are some who don't like military simulations.

I remember ages ago, in a cybercafe, Counterstrike was the hype thing. I was playing HL Deathmatch with some pals, a random guy stands behind me: "What is this game?"

Heppens. That's what's cool, in a way, about PC and modding. :P
*DO NOT BUY ARMA 2 IF YOU JUST WANT TO PLAY DAY Z*

They are making a standalone version right now, which wont involve having to spend $40 / £30 on a game which you probably won't use.
Don't forget WarZ is coming, a game that should approximate what it would be like to weather an undead world.

That aside, ARMA 2 has other great MODs. There is one that takes place near an active volcano. Your mission is, with your squad you have to locate a missing person up near the volcano's caldera. But to get there you have to face off a village of insurgents, steal their helicopter and use it to find said missing person. However while you'e doing all this the volcano is starting the early stage of eruption. Gas jets erupting randomly from the ground around you. If you wait too long, the volcano erupts and completely blankets the environment in dust, and you die with the rest of your squad mates. I you're in the helicopter when it happens you crash.

Incidentally Bohemia Interactive used to sell ARMA 2 and Operation Arrowhead with the DLCs on STEAM. But since DayZ came out they split it out of the pack to lure in more DayZ adopters. Good thing I picked up pre-DayZ days.

I myself am not a fan of adverbs, or most adjectives. Then again I'm a fan of Hemingway lol

Adverbs are horrible. Well, they're not that bad, but they're way too easy to overuse, he said confidently while sitting firmly.

"if you have to use an adverb, then your verb wasn't strong enough." That's what I think when I write. You are totally right man. I've been on writing forums and it's easy to spot newbs because they totally overuse adverbs. Like the previous sentence, I like to use them to emphasize things in my casual posts. That might explain all the f-bombs I use as well lol

Anyways I'm off topic. I could talk about this all day lol
Why is it called dayZ if it's a zombie game? Dayz sound like daisy

Z like Zombie... or Zorro, Zorro is always a safe bet.
The scariest part about DayZ is the other players.
They could leave the Zombies out and nobody would notice.
