First Person Shooters are a dime a dozen. Zombies might be the most overused motif in video games--and pop-culture in general. Yet somehow the zombie apocalypse mod of the über-realistic military FPS turned out as fresh as the morning dew. That is if the dew was actually blood pouring from some unfortunate soul's artery ripped open by the brain-hungry undead. Ladies and gentlemen, here's Day-Z!

The key feature of DayZ is it's realism. Yeah--that's right--realism. Because zombie apocalypse is a very real threat, and there's a lot of people taking it--pardon the pun--dead serious. Movies like Zombieland, 28 Days Later, and shows like The Walking Dead might be just entertainment for you, but for some they're far more than just that. They're survival tutorials, preparing the farsighted few for the sudden, but inevitable undead outbreak. You'd be better off joining their ranks, so learn your zombie-lore and test your survival skill in the safe test-environment that is DayZ. You can be sure, that what you'll experience in the game is a 1:1 representation of a real-life zombie pandemic. That's right--you don't play DayZ just for fun. You play it to prepare.

Even though DayZ is still in the alpha stage of development, it gathered a community of way over a million players and has received nothing but high praise from the press. Eurogamer and Kotaku called it "probably the best zombie game ever", Wired speculated that it will be the most terrifying game of 2012, and Bit-Tech comparing its impact on gaming to that made by the most influential mods: Counter Strike and DotA. DayZ offers a huge feature-rich gameworld for an immersive experience, massive multiplayer that will have you work with or compete against dozens of other players, a complex medical system featuring realistic injuries and ways to treat them, hunting and scavenging for food and other scarce supplies, and--duh!--hordes of zombies hungry for your braaaainz.

The current version of DayZ supports easy installation and simple startup interface, that will let you easily find and join a server. Once you have Arma 2: Combined Operations all you need to do is download the installer file from the mod's official site, run it... And you're ready to go. Or rather: go, go, GO! Just remember about cardio!

Both Arma 2 and the Operation Arrowhead expansion, that are required to run DayZ, are now available on GOG.com as Arma 2: Combined Operations, and until Tuesday, August 28 at 10:59 AM GMT you can get them for the reduced price of $23.99. Hurry up, don't let other survivors get a head start!

gameon: I still have to play through Arma 1. I've not played much of it, but it seems similar to Operation flashpoint, which is great.
Just to make sure: You are aware that the ArmA series basically IS Operation Flashpoint, right? Same engine, same developers, same goal?

Yeah, i used to own the retail version of Operation Flashpoint. And i know that GOG had to change the name to Arma Cold War Assault.

When i re-purchased the game a few years ago, i found it to be a bit to clunky and dated, which is why i didn't get it on GOG. But when i saw they made Arma, i knew i had to get it.
I'm not having fun anymore.
The paranoia is off the chart. Players killing each other, just cause the other one might be a bloody looter or murderer. There is no more player interaction beyond that. No more trading, no spontanious travel together. Nothing.

Yes, Brilliant Rocket. You showed us that humans are humans wolf. We tear each other apart, if it's about survival and no higher authority exists anymore. Cool. Thats what "Night of the Living Dead", "28 Days later" and even freakin "Resident Evil" keeps telling us for the past 30 years. I've had enough of that bullshit.
It's not fun to me, anymore.

tburger: Jeez why all those zombies are so popular?
avatar
JMich: I'd say because it is one of the "safe" hate groups, noone is going to get angry if you start shooting at zombies, while shooting at {insert group here} means that some people will complain that the game is racist/sexist/speciest or in any other way prejudiced.
Hmmm....shooting bandits, thugs, raiders, gang members, pirates is no longer 'political correct' :-P?

I think that it's got close to nothing to do with that. There's always been certain "waves" of games in this industry. The most popular and biggest one before the zombie stuff was probably the WWII phase which was officially initiated with the release of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and didn't end until someone came up with something more lucrative such as shooting ethnical minorities from Africa or the Middle East or zombies soon after. A "wave" won't stop as long as there's money to be made with it. There's nothing else to it, really.

Sadly the "clunkiness" seems to be a permanent feature of the series. ^^

Gangsters and punks are also voters you know, so they have to be treated with dignity. ;P

Also, how would you depict them? Would you go for a racial stereotype and incur the wrath of that race? Would you go for foreign accents? Or would they also be the same as the main "hero", and have people ask "Why are they all looking the same? There are more races in the world you know."?
Slippery slope, so just make the enemies undead, and be done with it (at least until Reginald Shoe starts his "Dead Rights" movement)
Perhaps tad late to the party?

You know, your arguments would make more sense if there hadn't been lots of popular games about shooting minorities already. :P
Not a mod fan but,.....I think it's awesome that GOG has started to spotlight some of the best mods. It's a great way to bring even more gamers to the site!

Nice job on this!

Sense? My arguments have to make sense?!?! O_o
I was following the recent trend of the game's industries, of fearing the reaction, embracing the reaction, and having a knee-jerk reaction, with sense not being part of said reactions.
Oh well, time to see if I have some sense lying around...
I don't care what I shoot at, as long as it dies in funny ways.

I'm sorry, what?

Bored and rambling, feel free to ignore me.
Worth mentioning that it's going to be a standalone game, so possibly not a good idea to buy the Arma 2 pack JUST for the DayZ mod?
