I love the visual artwork in videogames and when I play a game, I often spend a lot of time also trying to capture great photos of some of my favorite characters and locales.
My favorite feature in Steam is the screenshot: all you have to do is press F12 and it stores the screenshot on your harddrive and you can load it to your Steam Cloud in your profile.
Here are a few choice shots I have taken. Please share yours too:
These are large images to keep the resolution high. Zoom in and out by holding ctrl and using the scroll wheel if they take up too much of your screen.
Dear Esther:
There is so much detail and beauty to Dear Esther. I was happy the game didn't have any fighting or objectives because it left me free to simply explore and snap photos with a HUD free first person perspective. I love the way the moon reflects on the water. The docks have such a cold lonely feel, except for the warm light emanating from the Kinkadian hut on the other side of the water.
Bulletstorm:
For such a brutally violent game, Bulletstorm is surprisingly beautiful. This shot captures much of what I love about the environments. Craggy rocks. Glowing sunlight. Tropical plantlife. Futuristic architecture. Otherworldly atmosphere
Dead Space:
Here is a quietly foreboding shot from Dead Space as Isaac explores the disheveled remains of the starship Ishimura. I like that the environment helps tell the story. Outside the hospital, there is a sign that reads "Sorry, we are full." There is trash littered along the halls, crazed graffiti on the walls, smeared blood, a handprint...
The Witcher 2:
The Witcher 2 amazingly looks better in its gameplay than most games look in their CGI cutscenes. This is a nice action shot I captured in the harpy-infested caves outside of Vergen. While Geralt casts an Igni flame spell to push back the harpy in front of him, another harpy is swooping in to flank him from the side. I love how the Igni spell lights up hot in the middle of this otherwise dark cave that glows from shafts of light breaking through from the cave opening above.
Psychonauts:
Raz stands proud amidst the insane twisting streets and fire hydrant surveillance cams in the paraoid "Milkman Conspiracy" level.
