tinyE: I am totally confused. I have the Spellforce Universe which is evidently SF 1 & 2 with expansions but then I see this which is seemingly an entirely different SP 2 and has a seven year release date difference.

Of course the Universe collection is so flawed I'm bound to get them all here eventually, but for the sake of what little is left of my sanity I'd like a little clarification.

Oh...good morning everyone. :D
Between the first two Spellforce 2 ( Shadow Wars and Dragon Storm ) and Demons of the Past, there was another Spellforce 2 expansion called Faith in Destiny. Faith in Destiny picks up the story from Dragon Storm ( though with a different character ), while Demons of the Past builds on the story from Faith in Destiny, seemingly with the character from Shadow Wars/Dragon Storm.

At the time when Phenomic was acquired by EA in 2006, one expansion was finished and ready for launch ( Dragon Storm ), while the second was still an work in progress, near completion, though. The second expansion was finished by other teams ( Jowood had one team to work on it, but went bankrupt and Nordic Games hired yet another team to finish it ). Three DLC's were made for Faith in Destiny.

Last year, EA finally did what EA does best: closed EA Phenomic ( responsible for stuff like Battle Forge, C&C: Tiberium Alliances and Lord of Ultima - complete waste of acquired talent, in my opinion ). So many of the original devs were free to go. Some joined the team that completed Faith in Destiny ( Mind Over Matter Studios ) and came with the third and the final expansion for Spellforce 2.

So after a gazillion years, we finally have a conclusion to the story that started in Shadow Wars.

Hope it clarifies the things a bit.
Spellforce rocks. Hopefully this isn't another Forsaken Gods for the series.

Edits: Stupid autocorrect.

http://www.gog.com/game/spellforce_2_demons_of_the_past seems to lack a 'Spellforce games on GOG.com' box like that of http://www.gog.com/game/spellforce_platinum -- presumably because it isn't included in the series discount.
Nice release, wishlisted for now as my wallet is still recovering from the Winter Sale.

Ghorpm: Whoa! No half-naked chick on the cover? Is it a real SpellForce game?! The foundations of my universe are shaking!
avatar
Ghorpm: Wait! I know! With Jack Keane around they were just afraid that putting a half naked chick on the cover is... not... advisable. For her own safety. Or for Jack's safety? Either way, mystery solved :D

Sorry for my stupid jokes, I'm in a weird mood today ;P
With so many Leisure Suit Larry games around, I believe Jack Keane would be the least of their worries, wouldn't you say? :3

I'm with the "fascinated but never could get into it myself" crowd. But then again, I really suck at RTS's, so it's to be expected.

Ah but you see, both Jack Keane and SpellForce are published by Nordic Games so I kinda assumed it would be so much easier for Jack Keane to stick around half-naked SpellForce babes. And therefore they had to do something about it or it could have ended ugly ;)
I was very surprised to see it released today, especially since the developer only ever mentioned Steam, and GOG staff couldn't tell me if they would get this game as late as a couple of weeks ago.

I played and loved all of the previous games, and own physical copies of all of them.
Faith in Destiny was a let down, but it had a very problematic development cycle so I accepted it as it was...

What's the chance of there being a Spellforce bundle?

Fenixp: God damnig, why can't I get into SpellForce games? I always found them so fascinating, even spent a decent amount of time playing the original... But I never seem to be able to finish them. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that neither the RTS nor the RPG aspects are all that fleshed out, but still... I want to like these games!
Because they are terrible games, and I'd guess you've managed to beat your OCD.

Personally I've played all of them, well, except for FoD and this newest one, and the RTS elements are a complete crap hole, and the RPG elements. Terribly terrible RTS balance where your units are meaningless pixels and enemies constantly can beat the crap out of you unless you somehow find a way to exploit their silly AI, especially in the first series, and overpowered RPG elements, especially in the second series, making most of your non-hero units rather useless after a certain point in the campaign.

Really, they are that bad, yet I liked playing them. Go figure.
@ThomNG, @Nordic Games: Thank you very much for bringing Demons of the Past DRM-free to GOG. I will buy it now :-)
I hope that I can complete my Spellforce collection with Faith in Destiny here on GOG soon.
Crap. I've played Spellforce previously, also not being able to get into the experience fully, but I'm a sucker for companies that actually act like real live people rather than wallet sucking jackasses. More stuff to add to my phone book-sized wishlist, I guess.
Most interesting... but I must wait until my salary comes knocking on the door. Wishlisted for now.

GOG is still missing SpellForce 2: Faith in Destiny.

SpellForce 2 has four installments: Shadow Wars, Dragon Storm, Faith in Destiny and Demons of the Past. GOG is missing the third one (or the second expansion.) It has the same publisher. Why does not GOG have it?

Same here. I've only beaten the first game and probably half of the first addon so far. The game isn't fun, it isn't even good by any means (although I think the graphics are pretty good for an *RTS* of its time - not quite for a third person RPG, though) and yet in some twisted way I enjoyed playing it. If only the ending hadn't been so stupid. I actually would have preferred a generic "and they lived happily ever after" over the one they chose. :P

At least my girlfriend and I had a good laugh when I told her that when a certain NPC needs treatment for a cataract you have to visit the dentist out of all medically capable people in the world (one at a totally random and distant location at that). Also as someone who has endured many long and terrible surgeries on her eyes because of exactly that condition she lol'd hard at the fact that the dentist just gives the hero a needle and tells him to pierce the poor guy's eyes.
