SheBear: Now, now, you're not helping the idea that women would be able to be Witchers by essentially calling them innately weak.
hehe . . . sorry that is not what I was trying to imply . . . =)

Just the first idea that came to mind as to why there are none / few female Witchers. Many intriguing reasons why there are so few I'm sure.
I would love to see more games in the universe that had the player take on a different role for each one. For example, a game where you play as one of the elven Soi-tel would be very cool. Another neat game would have the player assuming the role of one of the sorceresses like Triss.

Oh yeah !!!
I guess we'll have to buy many copies so that CDP can grow their studio to allow more games in a development :P

lol . . . probably so . . .CDP is my favorite publisher at the moment so I want them to grow . . . =)
I've already played through it twice, but I'm planning on a 3rd run I think.

I might start playing it when I get the GOG version, but I'll probably pause that playthrough when I get TW2.

stonebro: I hang my head in shame and admit that I haven't been paying attention lately.

There been any announcement of a collectors edition of TW2 retail?

Also, is a console release just postponed or officially scrapped?

WBGhiro: I haven't read the books, so i'm not sure but there could also be lore-related reasons why there are no female witchers, so he'd have to retcon that first (and retcons are rarely popular with the core audience).

Stuff: I have not read the books either but I would assume the transformation is so brutal that few women survive but . . . those that do would be exceptional Witchers. Would they have powers unique to female Witchers?

Edit: sorry for the double post
The transformation is so brutal few PEOPLE survive it. I think mages were just sort of scared of murdering female kids as well as male ones... HOWEVER there WAS a female who received Witcher training in her childhood, but she was lacking mutation (that means nearly no potions since they are highly toxic for human and no above human reflexes), still, she was an AMAZING fighter and, to add up, she was able to harness magic. She would totally make an amazing playable character.
Anybody else puzzled that Mr. Gog isn't releasing TW until the same day as TW2?

I'm planning on playing through TW before going on to TW2, but since I haven't a copy to play, that means that I have to either buy one elsewhere or wait to start TW2 until after I've bought both games at launch.

Actually, TW is going on sale a week before TW2 unlocks.

I'm rereading the page here, and the wording on that is somewhat confusing. Upon reread, it does appear that you're correct, they're letting us download nearly all of the game so that we don't have to download very much at all when it gets unlocked. Which hopefully will help the servers out on launch day, no idea how popular this is going to be.

But, still that sort of gets confusing because a DRM free title shouldn't have that sort of silliness attached. Not that I'm really complaining, I think in this instance it's better than if they didn't use it, but it is a bit confusing.

She would indeed. My Lady is an avid gamer and we usually play two games using different characters . . . playing our separate games as time allows. She's an RPG fan and really tried to get into the Witcher. Not having a female character made the game less than enjoyable for her.

She played a couple of levels and just stopped waiting on me to finish my play through so we could move on to another game. Having the character you described above would have made the game awesome for her I believe . . . =)

I'm towards the end of the second book, and there are only around 5 Witchers left in the world and they are all men. It's revealed in the back story that an army attacked their castle and killed most of the Witchers and killed the sorcerers who were in charge on mutating the young children. The 5 remaining Witchers have no idea how to mutate new children, that's why the girl Fenixp mentioned was only trained in survival and sword techniques.

Maybe tell your girlfriend about the books, so far the first 2 have been translated into English. There are some great female characters in them, like Yennefer. She hasn't shown up in the video game yet though. Oh, and the video game actually takes place 10 years after the final book in the series. I wish the publisher would hurray up and get the rest translated.

So why can't your girlfriend enjoy playing a game as a guy character? I've played several games where the lead was female, and in RPGs I make some crazy cool gals for my party.

Thanks for you input and suggestions. I plan on reading the series but I doubt she will. She has / does play male characters in games that don't offer female characters. The Witcher was too much so . . for her I guess . . . and she just couldn't relate to the character. This was actually the first RPG that I've ever seen her quit. A good female Witcher character would have captured her completely as she loves this kind of game.

The Witcher series is the only games we won't be playing simultaneous games . . . =)

It's understandable, I think. The Witcher is quite (more so than most games, and that is saying something) male-focused. Women play minor, cursory roles; Geralt is a chick magnet (which isn't everyone's cup of tea to begin with) plus the sex cards; etc. The only other RPG I can think of that doesn't let you play a female character is Planescape: Torment, and I thought that did a fairly good job of depicting female characters and not being too androcentric.
