Simple survey why the rep system here is entirely broken.
What you have to do to increase your rep:
1. Post daily
2. Throw a giveaway or drop codes
3. Say something funny, but you have to be tinyE for this one
What you have to do to decrease your rep:
1. Register on GOG
Personally, I couldn't care less, but I also couldn't resist posting this. :)

I'm one those been-on-gog-long posted-on-forum-late types. I don't care much about rep, but if I see a post that is rude or insulting but person has high rep I'm more inclined to say "maybe that one just has a bad day today" than when someone with low rep offends.
Also I only up-rep posts that I genuinly like (like good arguments, helpful answers for technical questions or funny stuff). I almost never downrep, I think the only one I ever downrepped was Thorne in the atheist thread.
So if there are some people who up/down all the time my influence is likely like a drop in the ocean.

There are moments where I wish we could include images in posts directly so I could add gems like this.
A GIF often tells a thousand words.

To hell the rep! If you regularly post on GoG, chances are that everybody already knows you, so a number won't change the idea the communty has about your behavior. Act like a nice guy and you will be known as a nice guy; act like an idot, and you will be known as an idiot. Or at least, I think so.
If I'm not mistanken, Sigmund Freud once said: "Downrepping random people on the internet does not increase the e-peen size". Really, the downreppers should deal with their personality disorders.

I've never downrepped any person regardless of what they say (unless it's an automated spambot). In my opinion, people qualify or disqualify themselves, no external help needed :)

...and there were many more at the time.
The down/upvote system could probably be fixed by making it public which posters have made the votes. This is how it works in the Penny Arcade forums. I think that would cut out most of the senseless ratings.

I was hit pretty hard myself and I was curious whether it was something personal or on a wider scope, so I did some statistics. Eventually I guessed it was both, but I'll probably never know (if somebody can clarify this, feel free to contact me with a fake account via PM).
But what I've also found out, is that some people, despite some of them stating how unimportant rep is, are artificially uprepping themselves on a regular daily bases. I do understand that there's a need for protecting oneself from down-repping, but in my opinion it's an abuse of the rep system as well and there's no need to do so, now that the down-rep-wave has passed.

By creating dummy accounts I guess. Anyone that desperate about rep would almost certainly stoop to such levels.

I remember when tinyE came here. That's when the downrep epidemic started. The great thing is, he just kept being himself and look at his rep now. 444 at this post. And he's still making just as many silly quips as ever. But we also all know him better. Perhaps I'll even vacation at his B&B some day.
If that little number and a few stars have meaning and you want to fit in, then do the following:
- Don't talk about religion or politics. (I break this one periodically, but with respect)
- Do talk about video games.
- Don't be a dick.
- Do suggest help for games that you know well.
- Don't taunt people, call them names or make them feel like an idiot.
- Do discuss things close to your heart that you think people may find:
A: Interesting
B: Helpful
C: Funny
That should do it. Follow those simple rules, and your rep will fly sky high. And, unlike some folks, I really do believe that rep matters. It helps the community inform itself what is decent and indecent behavior. For some reason, a rep of -10 keeps trolls off the site. I don't know why. It's just a stupid number. But for the most part, it works.

As for the B&B I actually had guests last night so I need to go do some actual work. Later

About month or 2 months ago I was about 170. After winning some contests, giving away games and replying daily - I'm about 30 points lower.
