Is Torchlight any good? It seems to be Diablo style game so that in mind, I really enjoyed the first Diablo but I hate Diablo 2 with a passion.

I hate Diablo, both of them, but really enjoyed Torchlight. Take that for what you will. I never completed Torchlight, but I do intend to go back if there's ever a lull in my other gaming.
It's a Diablo clone that does that style game better than Diablo does in my opinion.

Torchlight is basically Diablo 2.5, even to the point of copying large portions of Diablo 2's GUI. It has a few innovations, some of which are completely useless, and the story is very much inferior. Also, the difficulty level is all over the place, and for the final boss fight it matters a lot which skills you have trained along the way. Of course, nothing in the game tells you what skills you will need, so if you happen to have trained the wrong ones, prepare to be frustrated.

All in all, if you don't like Diablo 2, then stay as far away from Torchlight as you possibly can. Although I find it rather odd that you like Diablo, but absolutely hate Diablo 2. I feel kind of the opposite.
Also, it helps that the guy who did the soundtrack for Diablo made the soundtrack for Torchlight as well.

The only thing it's missing is multiplayer and that will change when Torchlight 2 comes out later this year.
Torchlight is good and worth it as its on offer,

DO NOT JUST DO TREASURE MAPS THOUGH (I did and started level 2 with a level 28 character)

If your still in 2 minds I have a copy in my give-away running from 18th through the 24th of June. (no promises you would get it though, not my decision)
I liked Diablo way back when I first played it. Probably wouldn't now though, as it's not my preferred style of game anymore. Never played D2.

That being said, I picked up Torchlight on sale for $5 last year, due mostly to all the high praise it got. It turned out to be one of my big disappointments. The game itself is well done I guess, but it's just not my cup of tea and I only got to the third or fourth level before I stopped. If I could give it away, I would. I doubt I'd ever want to play it again.
I'd say it's more of Diablo 1.5.
It's got one town and you go deeper in one dungeon. It really goes back to basics.
I really like the atmosphere, great music (if you like the first Diablo you should notice the main town theme) and simple gameplay.

Only bad thing would be that it's easy, start playing at least on hard.
Its good but gets pretty repetitive, I got bored about 3/4 of the way through and never finished.. if you like diablo esque games its great
Torchlight is kinda remake of Diablo 1, so if you like D1 then go for it.

I liked D1 and Torchlight but not D2.
I found the tone of Torchlight to be much lighter than Diablo, but in an entirely humourless way when compared to something like Deathspank. It seems to occupy a limbo I'm not inclined to get lost in.
I enjoyed it for the most part, even though it got very repetitive, the story was pretty lame and the end boss was frustrating. I'm one of the many who maybe ended up facing him with a wrong build and never could defeat him. Later on, I watched the end game sequence on youtube, just to check if it was worthy the frustration of having to beat the end boss, but no, it wasn't.

This is not the type of game for people who enjoy freedom in their games, who like story, character depth or complex mechanics. It's an easy, straightforward, linear action RPG where you kill everything in the dungeon and move on to kill some more, loot corpses, combine jewels and try to come up with the best combination of gear possible to level your character to beat even more monsters. There's some puzzles in there, but it's mostly go from A to B and pull this lever while avoiding your own death. The bad guy pulls the classic "Oh, you found me? Well, have a whack at THIS while I escape to the next level!" scheme and that is not originality at it's finest.

It's a decent time killing, colorful romp for mouse clicking lovers and gear collectors.
Too casual for me. Boring.
I used to love Diablo, I mostly dislike Diablo 2, and I'm pretty tired of left-clicking-for-loot in general. I quite enjoyed Torchlight. It's the closest game I've yet played to the original Diablo. It's rather long-winded - it lost my attention before I got all the way through it - but it's a reasonably good time if you're into these sorts of games.
Torchlight is worth the price to be paid if you enjoyed Diablo 1 or just hack and slash/loot period. Some people found it boring as it really is all about just killing hordes of enemies, gaining loot, and leveling up. I found it satisfying enough to beat the main dungeon and get a couple characters around the lvl 50 mark. Sure, it's kind of a stale experience without multiplayer, a real story, and some features I could have done without (can't bring myself to fish much in the game) but it was really never about all that and is priced accordingly so. If ya got the time and desire I think it's worth it, if not then maybe just wait for the second one. Hell the soundtrack invoking memories of diablo I was worth the experence for me.
