crazy_dave: Huh so he was ... I didn't know that (when I originally wrote it was a mistake or so I thought). So they were both transplanted New Yorkers, one who moved to Australia and the other who moved to Ireland. Therefore my original statement was right ... both the main hero and the bad villain in a film about war between Scotland and England were played by Americans! :D

wpegg: The result being that... everyone hated the English. In fact my brother went to uni in Scotland shortly after it (about 1 year), and said that it had galvanised the Scottish against the English more than anything else.

So... thanks America. Thanks for not making us the bad guys.
You're quite welcome though I wouldn't really ascribe the upsurge in the SNP to Braveheart. :) Patrick McGoohan was really good in that role. Such a great actor. Ah well.

Besides Scottish sentiment has always been to give the English as much shit as possible - though how seriously one does it depends on the person's nationalistic tendencies. As far as I can tell people serious about splitting from the UK are far in the minority. It's only because the conservatives/tories are so hated and labour lost its roots that the SNP gained the power it enjoys now. I think most polls indicate most Scots would (sanely) rather stay within the UK.

wodmarach: Most of Scotland doesn't give a crap but Cameron being an idiot isn't helping most would prefer to stay in the UK many would even like to lessen devolution in exchange for more representation in westminster
I wasn't suggesting Scotland wanted devolution. In fact I think the national sport of hating the English would be massively diluted if we just said "f-off and sort yourselves out". Just saying that there's a lot of hate, and Braveheart didn't help.

That's my understanding (not living there myself obviously, but having family and friends in both England and Scotland).

I suspect so too. I'm not posting in a nationalistic way here, that previous one was more of a funny because it's true joke. Braveheart did have the immortal line with the archers about "but sir won't we hit our own men? Yes, but we'll hit there's too, and we've got reserves."
